  1. APSS09 Student SHM competition 7/13/2009 Shinae Jang

  2. Purpose • Comprehensive understanding of the smart SHM technology • Wireless sensor and software • ISHM toolsuite • Experimental modal analysis • Field experiments APSS09

  3. Goals • Software installation • TinyOS installation • ISHM toolsuite installation • Data measurement on two in-use pedestrian bridges • Modal analysis parameter • Optimal sensor location to obtain better mode shapes • Data acquisition parameters: fs, Nfft, … • Output-only system id using either NExT/ERA or FDD • Formal presentation * Detailed tasks are listed in the ‘Lab and Competition’ guide APSS09

  4. Evaluation guideline • Accuracy • Comparison with reference results • Software installation and operation • Optimal sensor location • Engineering insight • Expertise in modal analysis • Appropriate sensing and DAQ parameters • Discussion • Presentation APSS09

  5. (1) Wireless sensor • Sensor • Base station node: • USB cable, debug board, imote2 with external antenna • Sensing nodes: • Battery boards, imote2, SHMa sensorboards • In total 4 sets will be provided for each group • When can we use? • Wireless sensor lab • Tuesday afternoon ~ Wednesday afternoon APSS09

  6. Sensing nodes APSS09

  7. (2) Software installation • TinyOS installation (Done) • ISHM toolsuite installation • Version 1.3.1 • One or more laptop should be prepared for the competition APSS09

  8. (3) TestbedsSuspension bridge (Lake of the Woods) APSS09

  9. Free vibration tests APSS09

  10. (4) TestbedsMahomet Bridge APSS09

  11. Mounting Use modeling clay between gray weight and the wood plank Laptop APSS09

  12. Jumping Straight knees Bent knees APSS09

  13. (4) Test arrangement • Mahomet bridge • Span on the Sangamon River : Groups 1, 4 (11) • Span on the grass : Groups 3, 6, 7 (17) • Assistants: Shinae, Hongki, Ryan, Brian P • Suspension bridge • Groups 2, 5, 8 (17) • Assistants: Han, Robin, Chia-Ming APSS09

  14. Note • Groups should coordinate with other groups on the same span for the testing time planning • One jumping at a time • Other people should be out of bridge not to induce excessive human damping on the bridge APSS09

  15. (5) Ride arrangement • Mahomet Bridge • Wednesday 8:30AM at North gate of Newmark Lab. • These groups should move to the Lake of the Woods park after data measurement for the picnic. • Suspension bridge • Wednesday 9:00AM at North gate of Newmark Lab. APSS09

  16. (6) Presentation • Many pictures and figures • Everyone should take a role and work together • List the individual roles • Suggested roles are listed in ‘Field vibration test using wireless sensors’ guide APSS09

  17. Wireless sensor lab announcement • Practice the SHM competition • Wireless sensor usage (H/W and S/W) • Modal analysis lab with wireless setup • Random Vibration and Impact hammer tests • With your own parameters • 1st session: 9:45AM – 12:45PM • 2nd session: 1:45PM – 4:45PM APSS09
