  2. IEEE FDC Urbanization Challenge • The world trends are related to urbanization • The cities hosting: • 2013 half of the world population • 2020 half of Asia population • 2035 half of Africa population • 2050 expected population grow from 3.6 to 6.3 billion

  3. IEEE FDC Urbanization Challenge • IEEE see an opportunity to contribute to manage the urbanization challenge assisting municipalities • Help guide in appropriate use of technology • Raise awareness on benefits and downside of technology Successful Technology disappears from every day perception – IEEE as a trusted assurance that the best technology can be exploited

  4. IEEE Approach • Start selecting one city per year per continent • Criteria: • The city must have a concrete plan and funds to become a smart city • The local constituency welcomes IEEE involvement • Local authorities have interest in sharing experiences at the international level and in becoming a path leader • There is a local IEEE chapter and section to take responsibility and support the project • There is a local university interested in workin on Smart Cities space and some form of local industry commitment

  5. Guadalajara first city selected • Has established and organization called Guadalajara Ciudad Creativa Digital (CCD) to drive the transition to Smart City • The Smart City effort will be focused on the historic city center • This effort is a comprehensive strategy for the revival and regeneration of the main city area

  6. IEEE-CCD First Steps • IEEE-CCD Smart Cities of the Future Kickoff on past 29-30th October • Results: • 8 talks from IEEE, Industry, Government leaders • 4 panels: Technical, Social, Public Policy and Business • 6 Working groups enabled: • Physical Infrastructure • Internet of Things • Data visualization & analytics • Open data framework • Smart City metrics • Education for Smart Cities

IEEE Looking on Smart City Metrics • How to measure the progress of a smart city compared with other cities? • Guadalajara is looking to not reinvent the wheel • ITU presented on the IEEE-CCD Kickoff a metrics initiative where efforts can be joint to: • Select a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) making sense • Start applying KPIs

  8. Conclusions and Next Steps IEEE has flagship initiative with the urban challenge First City selected to be assisted by IEEE Working groups are enabled with first results as white papers Not reinvent the wheel & metrics could be joint efforts IEEE-ITU-CCD Next IEEE-CCD Workshop on February Working groups from ITU & IEEE-CCD can have a virtual meeting to join efforts GDL CCD could be a test bed to start applying KPIs
