    9. Riddoch purchased vast parcels of land and over the years was impressed with the remarkable rate of growth of fruit trees and vines in the areas of soil with a distinctive red colour. He began buying land at 'Katnook' a nearby property to his own which had similar rich red soil. (The name 'Katnook' is aboriginal for fat land, denoting the rich fertile character of the country.) Determined to encourage closer settlement in the southeast, in 1890 Riddoch formed the Coonawarra Fruit Colony, set up its administration headquarters at 'Katnook' and sold off the land in 10 acre blocks. It was here at 'Katnook' that Coonawarra was born. Riddoch planted 140 acres of his own vines. His first vintage in 1895 was a low key event in a nearby nursery shed. His second, with a much greater volume of fruit and attended to by a qualified winemaker, William Salter, was made in his own woolshed at 'Katnook' in 1896. By all accounts this second vintage gave an indication of the quality that was to come. In 1967 the Yunghanns family purchased 'Katnook' and in 1969 planted their first vines. The family renamed the property 'Katnook Estate' and formed the Coonawarra Machinery Company (now known as Wingara Wine Group). In 1980 production of wine under both the Riddoch and Katnook Estate labels commenced in the 'Katnook' woolshed just as John Riddoch had done 84 years earlier. Vinification 2001 season provided some trying grape growing conditions for late ripening varieties. A cool wet spring was followed by above average temperatures during summer and veraison. Fine conditions in the late stages of the harvest period, allowed the fruit to be picked at maturity, and with reduced disease pressures, following mid-season rains.Yeilds were slightly above average, and the wines display good varietal flavours with nice ripeness and good palate depth.     16. appearance Deep red/black with crimson rim. bouquet The nose on this wine displays a mixture of blackberry allspice, raspberry chocolate and licorice with vanilla spice oak characters complementing the fruit perfectly. palate Powerful blackberries and blackcurrant flavours together with licorice and dark chocolate. These flavours are balanced by firm acidity and fully integrated tannin giving a wine of extraordinary depth and length of finish. This is the epitome of our Reserve Shiraz style. winemaking The fruit for the 2001 Reserve Shiraz was primarily sourced from our Willows Block at Fox Creek and harvested between 14 and 14.5 Baum. Fermentation on skins was for 8 days with a proportion of the wine (40%) completing fermentation in new American (80%) and French (20%) oak. The wine was matured for 15 months in new and 1 year old American oak. During this time it was racked 3 times allowing us to assess the quality of the wine and fine-tune our oak handling. technical analysis ph 3.43 TA 6.3 Alcohol 14.5% ageing potential Reflecting the vintage, this wine is made for medium to long term cellaring (although it is drinking well now) and should, if cellared correctly, drink well up to 2012. A cool spring followed by above average temperatures during summer and veraison. Fine conditions throughout the harvest period allowed the fruit to be picked at optimum maturity, and without any disease pressures. Winemaker Wayne Stehbens Awards Subsequent Tasting Notes Wine Tasting Date 27 Nov 2002 Colour Deep drimson red with purple tinged edges. Nose Complex fruit and stylish oak nose. Ripe berry fruit with hints of mulberry and plum with elegant oak maturation tones of vanillin, chocolate and cedar to complement the fruit aromas. Palate Ripe fruit flavours of berries, plums and hints of mulberries combined with attractive vanillin and chocolaty oak. Soft yet assertive, sligthly chalky tannins add to the palate structure which has a fine acid balance. Vinification Yields were slightly below average. The wines display good varietal flavours, good palate depth and structure with ripe tannins.
