  2. VERBS • Verb—a word used to express ACTION or a STATE of being. p. 371 • 1. Helping verb—HELPS the main VERB express ACTION or state of being. (Together they are called a verb phrase). p. 372 • (examples of Helping Verbs-IS, ARE, WAS, WERE, DO ) • 2. Action verb—a verb that expresses either PHYSICAL or MENTAL activity. p. 373 • (examples of Action Verbs– laugh, paint, sneeze ) • 3. Linking verbs—connects the SUBJECT to a word or word group that IDENTIFIES or DESCRIBES the SUBJECT. p. 374 • (Common Linking Verbs—IS, ARE, WAS, WERE, AM, BE, BEING, BEEN)

  3. VERBS • 4. Transitive verb—expresses an ACTION toward a PERSON, PLACE, THING, or IDEA. p. 379 (Ex.—held baby, brought flowers, read book, chased cat) • 5. Intransitive verb—expresses ACTION WITHOUT action PASSING to a RECEIVER. p. 379 (Ex.—sang beautifully, slept quietly, swam well) • ****VERB WHAT??????

  4. ADVERB • E. Adverb—a word that MODIFIES a VERB, an ADJECTIVE, or another ADVERB. p. 381 • Adverb questions: Where? When? How? To what extent?

  5. PREPOSITIONS • Preposition—a word that shows the RELATIONSHIP of a NOUN or a PROUNOUN, called the OBJECT of the PREPOSITION to another word. p 386 (ex—ABOUT, ABOVE, AT, BEFORE, BY, FOR) • G. Prepositional Phrase—All together, the PREPOSITION, the OBJECT of the preposition, and any MODIFIERS of the object. p. 388

  6. Conjunctions and Interjections • H. Conjunctions—words used to JOIN words or GROUPS of WORDS p. 389 • 1. Coordinating Conjunction—a word used to JOIN words or GROUPS of words that are used in the SAME way. (ex—and, but, for, nor, or, so yet) • 2. Correlative Conjunction---PAIRS of conjunctions that JOIN words that are used in the SAMEWAY. (ex.—both…and, either…or, neither….nor, not only….but also ) • Interjection—a word used to EXPRESS EMOTION. (ex.—Oh!, Wow!, Aha, Well,)
