  1. THE ROCK MISSIONS 2013: DOMINICAN REPUBLIC JULY 27-AUGUST 2

  2. POVERTY AND THE BIBLE There are over 2000 verses in the Bible speak on poverty and the poor • God’s Heart for the Poor • Psalm 140:12, “I know that the LORD secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy.” • God’s Commands Concerning the Poor • James 1:27, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” • Biblical Attitudes For Believers Towards the Poor • Proverbs 29:7, “The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern.” *Text from World Vision

  3. POVERTY AROUND THE WORLD The World Bank reports that 3.7 billion of the world’s 7 billion people live on or below just $2 a day! That is 52% of total world population! DOMINICAN REP: 16.6% of the population live on or below $2/day These are the people we have been called to work with and who we will be serving! August 2010 Gallup Poll: American Consumer’s average spending is $63 per day

  4. WHEN: • Summer: July 27-Aug 2 • WHO:  Rising 8th-12th grade students and Rock parents and volunteers COST: • $1700 (includes flights, meals, lodging, ground transportation, and travel insurance) • PARTNER ORGANIZATION: SCORE International and Empowering Action • MINISTRY ON THE GROUND: Children’s ministry, street evangelism, door to door, inner city outreach, city wide outreaches, special needs ministry, Emanuel House Children’s Center. Emanuel House was built from proceeds from NYAid and feeds, teaches and nurtures 150 needy children in the village of Quisqueya. DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

  5. Some of the 150 children who participate in Emanuel House

  6. LODGING AND MEALS Los Marlins Suites Juan Dolio, Dominican Republic HOTEL: We have been staying at this hotel for the past 4 years. It is located in a gated community. The service is wonderful. MEALS: All meals are eaten at the hotel. Bottled/purified water is also only used from the hotel

  7. ROOMING Los Marlins Suites Juan Dolio, Dominican Republic Most rooms have 2 double beds and 1 pull out couch (5 people per room). Students will room with 3-4 other students and 1 adult leader. Adults coming on the trip, who are not student room leaders, will room with other adults.

  8. FLIGHTS • FLIGHTS: We are unable to accommodate special flight requests or have people buy their own flights. There are a couple of reasons for this: • We pre-purchase group tickets • In order to better serve our partner ministry and make the on ground arrival of 220+ people as smooth as possible, we have 5 flights groups. This means SCORE is already doing 5 separate airport pick ups on July 27. • Organizing over 220+ people for international travel is already difficult, and adding individual flights, apart from the group, complicates things for our MBC staff and partner ministry SCORE who have to keep track of all the details • We are responsible for trip participants and must know where you are at all times. We are unable to do this if people organize their own travel. Also, in case of a crisis situation we are able to coordinate with MBC and our insurance provider to get us flights out of the country. • This is part of the experience of a missions trip and promotes unity • We have already booked group flights. All flights are out of Reagan National Airport in DC. You will be assigned a flight by campus location and team.

  9. MINISTRY TEAMS TEAMS: Teams are usually between 20-25 people. They are organized by location (Tysons, Loudoun, PW, Bethesda) and then by grade. During the week, each team will rotate through the different ministry sites, with the goal that each team gets to experience different ministries and gets the opportunity to serve in multiple settings and to multiple groups of people.

  10. HOW TO APPLY The DR Application is electronic and now online at:www.mbctysons.org/missions. A trip deposit of $125 will be due at the time of your online application.  This is non-tax deductible and non-refundable, BUT it will count towards your overall trip total of $1700. There is an April 1st deadline to apply. Once you apply online, you will be contacted by Tysons, Loudoun, Prince William, or Bethesda staff to set up an interview. At the time of your interview, you are required to turn in the liability documents listed on the website.

  11. WHAT HAPPENS ONCE I AM ACCEPTED ON THE TEAM? • Once we receive your online application and successfully complete your interview the following will occur: • You will receive a “Team Guide” with information and resources on how to begin support raising. The team guide also has information on various aspects of the trip. • You will receive a schedule of team meetings and trainings • You will need to check your email weekly for trip updates • You will receive a schedule of support deadlines, which you must keep up with

  12. EXPECTATIONS RAISING SUPPORT: We expect each team member to put in full effort into raising their full support. Apart from covering flights and hotels, raising full support allows us to do effective ministry on the ground. We will hold all team members to support deadlines. Even if you are able to write a check for the whole amount, we are asking that all team members send out letters. Anything we over raise goes straight to ministry! If, as a team, we can get as much funds as possible, we will be able to have a greater impact on those who truly need it!

  13. EXPECTATIONS DRESS CODE: Due to SCORE Policy and to be sensitive to the local Christian culture, all team members must adhere to these guidelines. This is non-negotiable: • DURING MINISTRY HOURS • Ladies • Modest dress, skirt, and top with sleeves for Sunday church visits • Loose knee length shorts/capris or longer • No tight spandex athletic pants • Loose fitting t-shirt and no tank tops • Closed toed shoes • Men • Pants, collared shirts and shoes for Sunday church visits • Knee length shorts or longer, no tank tops • Closed toed shoes • AT THE HOTEL AT NIGHT • Ladies: Knee length shorts or longer. No spandex athletic pants. No tank tops. • Men: Shorts and t-shirts. • *sandals are fine to be worn at hotel

  14. EXPECTATIONS ATTITUDE: Participants on this trip must have a Christ like attitude. We are going to serve others and to make ourselves available in any way we are asked. This means no grumbling when it’s hot, buses are late, or your favorite meal wasn’t served etc. “Flexibility is the best ability” TEAM MEETINGS AND TRAININGS: Once you are accepted on the team, there will be various team meetings that we expect you to attend. This is where much information and training will occur, and it’s important for us as a team to be invested together.

  15. WHAT TO DO NEXT? Pray, Pray, Pray! Seek the Lord’s guidance if He is truly leading you to be apart of this trip 2. If the Lord leads you to go, you must apply online before the April 1st deadline
