The Death rate is 7.54 • The Currency of New Zealand is the New Zealand Dollar • 1 New Zealand dollar = 0.7965 U.S. dollars • The Native peoples of New Zealand are called the Māori

The first European explorer came to New Zealand in 1642. • It was discovered by Polynesians who developed the Maori culture. • On 6 February 1840, about forty Māori chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, the treaty gave Māori control over their lands and possessions and all of the rights of British citizens History

  6. Pukaea • A long wooden war trumpet hollowed out in sections and joined together at ends • It was used to warn others about the enemies • You blow into it and a vibrating reed vibrates • Is almost as loud as a siren and can be heard for miles

  7. Nguru • A small wooden, stone, or bone flute shaped into a whales tooth • Historical Context • It is blown into like a flute • Sometimes it is made out of a whales tooth

  8. Koauau • Made of wood, bone, or stone with different patterns carved into them • Its name was given by the Maori people to celebrate achievements of the Maori ancestors. • It is played just like the flute • It was made by individuals called Tohunga Whakairo, Master carvers

  9. Putorino • 9 to 20 inches long. Has an uneven bore, bigger in the center and narrower at the ends • The legend of Futrekai says he used it to play a love song and it was heard across Mokai islands. • Blown into like a trumpet • Used to be used as a megaphone
