  2. Action Hampshire: a brief summary • We are a charity that supports local communities and not-for-profit organisations • Mainly focused on Hampshire, but also Southampton, Portsmouth and further afield • Founded almost 70 years ago

  3. Helping our communities thrive… • Policy and information • Training / info on trading for social benefit • Representation and networking • Community consultation and research • Rural and community-led housing provision

  4. Marketing your building • What is your building’s Unique Selling Point? • Examples • Ample parking • Good stage and lighting • Changing rooms and playing field • High-specification kitchen • Very low cost

  5. Marketing your building • When is it generally available? • Ongoing process, not just at crisis point • Trial offers, open evenings etc. • Current and potential users • Local and (perhaps) more distant • Website, social media

  6. Running an adaptable and flexible facility • Booking times • Should include set-up and tidy-up • Equipment and storage issues • Most rooms will be multi-use • You’ll never have enough storage space? • Other ideas / problems?

  7. Grant applications • Like a job application – ‘why you should give money to us’ • Major fundraising projects will usually include grants aspart of the ‘mix’

  8. Outcomes • Don’t just explain what you want to do – often known as your ‘outputs’ • ‘Outcomes’ are the ‘what difference we will make’ bit – you could call it the ‘so what?’ • This can be tricky for building-related work • ESF Community Grants – ‘developing the skills of local people’ and ‘supporting people into employment’

  9. Outcomes • S Specific • M Measurable • A Aligned / Achievable • R Realistic / Relevant • T Time-based

  10. Outcomes quiz (1-4) • Plan and run 10 training courses • 20 people will reduce or stop their drug use by the end of the project • Run a befriending service for 150 disaffected young people by the end of the year • Build a new extension to our community hall

  11. Outcomes quiz (5-8) • 25 older people report reduced isolation through volunteering in their community • 15 low-income families eat more fruit and veg • Recruit 30 volunteers for our project • Get 20 residents involved in regular recycling and environmental activities

  12. Outcomes – making a difference to people • What improvements to people’s lives do you intend to bring about? • Don’t just describe the activities you want to carry out or the thingsyou want to produce

  13. Funding sources list and online database • Funding list available free from our website actionhampshire.org/who-we-work-with/community-buildings/funding-advice • Online database free for small organisations www.fundingcentral.org.uk/Default.aspx

  14. Connect with us! • Twice-monthly ‘News You Can Use’ • Funding opportunities • New legislation • Consultations and campaigns • Resources and toolkits • Action Hampshire membership • Basecamp message board
