ONE-Topics DocumentsMeasurement Topics • A district wide approach of identifying specific instructional targets of “learning goals” • Alignment of curriculum • http://district.fms.k12.nm.us/departments/currinst/high%20school%20social%20studies/U.S.%20History%20Alignment%20.pdf?FCItemID=S03E813A7 • This was begun with the 4 core subjects • Work is continuing with electives • This is an on-going process, documents may/will change • From this process 30 key terms were identified for each subject at each grade level • Provide feedback at all levels: class, school, district

TWO-Academic Background Knowledge • Vocabulary is a beginning step followed by simple concepts (basic objectives & learning goals), and then complex (application, extension of topic) • The purpose is to enhance student academic background knowledge through direct instruction in specific academic terms • A recommended that 30 terms are identified for each grade level, for each subject area • Common approach to instruction, Six-Step Process district wide

THREE-Ensure Effective Teaching • Formative assessments-Long Term Goals • NOW- Use of proven instructional strategies • Teachers compare effectiveness of strategies and student progress for specific learning goals • Student learning is progressing, data of success (pre/post test)-Assessments • No variation in teacher expectations about student learning • Student engagement and rigor

Our Focus • Academic Background Knowledge= VOCABULARY and the SIX-STEP PROCESS • Identification of 30 terms specific for your class/subject • Continued work on measurement topics • Classroom word walls • Direct vocabulary Instruction-6-Steps • Description • Explanation in students words • Picture, symbol • Activities • Discuss with other students • Games that allows use of terms Follow Marzano’s High Yield Instructional Strategies

  6. HSTW,3CC, TAV, EPSS, PDP • 3CC is our map • EPSS is our guide to the map, legend • HSTW provides strategies, vehicle to follow the map • TAV is evidence of what we are doing, effectiveness of following the map • PDP individual accountability, where are you on the map?
