  1. DLESE Data Services2005 Workshop

  2. Overview • Outcomes of 2004 DLESE Data Services Workshop • Plans and Structure of the 2005 DLESE Data Services Workshop • What is a “Swiki” and How to Use It.

  3. Purpose of DDS Workshops • To bridge the gap between the technical and educational communities concerning “data resources” • Facilitate the interaction of the scientific and educational communities in order to assure that Earth system science datasets and tools • are accessible and usable by educators • are used in the development of Earth system science educational modules • are available through DLESE

  4. DLESE Data Services (DDS) Workshop University of New Hampshire, May 2004 60 participants, 10 teams • Landsat • Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) • National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) • Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory/International Research Institute • Ridge 2000 (Geological and Biological Studies of the Mid-Ocean Ridge System) • Unidata • Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) • Earth Observatory • The Geoscience Network (GEON) • Museum → Plant Team

  5. Workshop Components: 2004 • Teams:Explore how to develop an educational module focused on a specific datasets and data analysis tool • Discussion Questions:Participants contribute ideas on how to overcome obstacles to the use of data in education • Poster Session:Share data, tools with all meeting participants • Talks:Overviews of different methods of data access and analysis in educational contexts

  6. 2004 DLESE Data Services Workshop Teams • Roles represented on each team • Data provider · Curriculum developer • Tool developer · Educator • Scientist • Cross-discipline collaboration enabled participants to • See issues of data access and use from new viewpoints • Work through language barriers • Encouraged all participants to contribute expertise

  7. 2004 DLESE Data Services Workshop Teams • Thread common through workshop: most valuable aspect was the ability to learn from and about the other group • “interacting directly with educators attending to hear first hand their needs, wants, and expectations” • Most valuable things were “talking with teachers, breakout groups, jargon free demos” • Teams generally wanted more time to work in their teams and network with those from other groups

  8. Earth Exploration Toolbook Chapter Resulting from 2004 DLESE Data Services Workshop

  9. Earth Exploration Toolbook Chapter Resulting from 2004 DLESE Data Services Workshop

  10. 2004 DLESE Data Services Workshop • Discussion Questions • Solutions for Data Access Issues • Comparing Data Access Technologies • Envisioning a Data Section in DLESE • Optimizing Data Use in Education • Designing a Data Section in DLESE • Addressing Pedagogical Issues

  11. 2004 DDS Workshop Discussion Questions • Solutions for Data Access Issues • Establish mechanism for educators to make their needs known to data providers • Implementing metadata standards that bridge the gap between scientific datasets, tools and educational vocabulary • Needs to be seen as a shared problem • Comparing Data Access Technologies(i.e. data and tools remain on server vs. downloadable data and analysis tools) • Browser based data analysis preferable by many educators who are not permitted to download data and install analysis tools

  12. 2004 DDS Workshop Discussion Questions • Envisioning a Data Section in DLESE • Ideal data search interface: • Minimum buttons, fields and other widgets • Clear enough to walk users through steps to request data • Map-based interface with consistent fields describing available data for selected locations • A combination of metadata standards would be necessary to fully characterize data within a digital library • Designing a Data Section in DLESE • Metadata must distinguish data from educational modules • Search mechanism necessary in DLESE that allows discovery of datanot associated with educational modules

  13. 2004 DDS Workshop Discussion Questions • Optimizing Data Use in Education • Value in both browser and stand alone applications • Higher value on accurate and clear metadata to allow educators and student to interpret data accurately than on one strategy for access and analysis • Addressing Pedagogical Issues • Information about data should be integrated with data • Units · Precision/accuracy • Definition of symbols · Locations • Color scales · Dates • Include description of how data were collected • Plain language descriptions of what data represent • Include strategies for using data in the classroom that address standards

  14. 2004 DDS Workshop Poster Session

  15. Outcomes of 2004 Data Services Workshop • Enabled the interaction of scientific and educational communities to bring Earth science data to education • “Participants particularly value the meeting as an opportunity for networking and making connections with members of the other groups” Evaluation Report From Final Day Evaluation of 2004 Data Services Workshop

  16. 2005 DDS Workshop Organizing Team Sandra Petrie, Unidata Susan Lynds (DLESE Evaluation Services), Univ. of Colorado Sarah Hester, Univ. of Northern Colorado Tamara S. Ledley TERC Ben Domenico Unidata Mike Taber Univ. of Northern Colorado LuAnn Dahlman TERC

  17. Components of the 2005 DDS Workshop • Teams:Explore how to develop an educational module focused on a specific datasets and data analysis tool • Discussion Sessions: • Data search scenarios • Meet with others in respective roles • Poster Session:Share data, tools with all meeting participants • Talks:Overviews of different methods of data access and analysis in educational contexts • Keynotes – examples of efforts to facilitate data use in education • Demos of educational modules using data and analysis tools
