Northwest Territory • Land given to the United States during the Treaty of Paris • Northwest Ordinance of 1787 • Made statehood possible for Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin • Prohibited Slavery • Established public schools
Southern Territories • Slavery was allowed • Pickney’s Treaty with Spain gave America the southern parts of Mississippi and Alabama
Adams-Ondis Treaty • Treaty with Spain in 1819 • Gave Florida to the United States • America didn’t pay for Florida • Americans moved in and Spain had no choice, but to give it up.
Louisiana Purchase • Bought from France in 1803 • France was at war and needed money • Sold Louisiana for $15,000,000 • Less than $.03 per acre • Thomas Jefferson was President • Lewis and Clark explored the territory
Texas Annexation • In 1821 the first Americans entered Texas • Agreed to become Mexican Citizens, Catholic and to not own slaves • They didn’t keep their word • Mexican President Santa Anna tried to force Texans to stick to their word. • War breaks out between Texas and Mexico • Texas won the war and declared independence in 1836 • 1845 The USA makes Texas the 28th state
Mexican Cession • Border dispute on the Texas/Mexico border caused Mexican-American War • U.S. won the Mexican-American War • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo 1848 • U.S. gave Mexico $15,000,000 for the 200,000 square miles of land • $.12 per acre

Alaska • Purchased from Russia in 1867 • 586,412 miles for $7,200,000 • $.02 per acre • Russia thought they would lose the land eventually to Britain so they wanted to get some money out of it. • Some thought America had bought a useless chunk of ice, but it turned out to be rich in minerals and oil.
