  4. Expansion and settling of the west • Wagon trains • From Missouri to the west! From the plains of Kansas and Oklahoma to the Rocky Mountains And the Sierras… Towns, ranches & Homesteads crop up

  5. The Oregon Trail…6 months to a year!Tough travel in a car…brutal in a wagon

  6. The Mormon Trail… Fleeing persecution, The new Christian faith, the Latter Day Saints, settle much of the Utah and Idaho territories

  7. Bad weather, hostile natives, lack of food and water in some areas, steep terrain

  8. Transcontinental Railroad Completed May 10, 1869 Railroads shorten the travel time to the west

  9. A key group of immigrants, the Chinese help build the railroad They would move on to Gold Mine, settle the land and become Americans!
