  1. Solar Power Jamilia Cobbin, Nou Chee Khang and PaChia Vang

  2. Description Conversion of sunlight into electricity either by using photovoltaic (PV) or concentrated solar power (CSP) Renewable

  3. PV vs.CSP Photovoltaic (Direct) Concentrated Solar Power (Indirect) Solar Cell Devices converting light into electrical energy Solar Panels Usually provides for : Calculators Watches Satellites Water Pumps Lights/ Home appliances Technology Use mirrors to reflect and concentrate sunlight Power towers, solar dishes and parabolic troughs Usually used for: Boiling water

  4. How does it work?…

  5. …It works like PV: Light hits the cells, creating an electric field Electrons are knocked loose from the atoms of semi conductor materials An electrical field is formed

  6. It works like (cont.) CSP: • Mirrors: focus sunlight and heats working fluid (heat that can be moved by liquid or by air) • Used to power an engine that drives a generator • Electricity is produced

  7. Have you seen this…

  8. How does it apply to households

  9. Advantages Free heat and sun! Clean and efficient No electrical expense Solar cells contain little maintenance and last for a lifetime Versatile You can make your own

  10. …Disadvantages Expensive to purchase/install Not available at night or during storm May disappear briefly if there is a lack of light
