  2. Slavery -Slavery had long been an issue in the United States since the Revolutionary war -Slavery had been the main reason why the South and the North came to a Civil War - Slaves made farmers free workers to pick items such as cotton and tobacco

  3. Important Terms Abolitionist- Someone who fought for the freedom of slaves, these people were usually found in the north Secession- This was when a state said they didn’t want to be a part of the rest of the United States Free State- A state that didn’t allow slaves and when the Civil War started sided with the Union Slave State- A state that allowed slavery, found in the south Mason Dixon Line- All states south of Pennsylvania became slave states while all states north of Maryland became free states

  4. Acts and Compromises • - Compromises such as the 3/5 compromise were used to count the number of slaves in a state or a territory ( area of land which hadn’t applied for statehood yet) • -Compromise of 1820- Missouri wanted to enter the Union as a slave state but this angered the North (who was against slavery) because there would be one less free state than slave state, so Maine entered the Union as a free state to keep the balance of power in Congress • -Fugitive Slave Act- If a slave was found in the North and was found he was ordered that runaway slaves to be returned • Compromise of 1850- California achieved statehood as a free state

  5. Comparing the Two Sides

  6. Emancipation Proclamation Abraham Lincoln delivered this address to free all of the slaves in the Southern States on September 22 1862 More information about this here

  7. The Ending of the War • The War was ended at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9th 1865 • Shortly after the war, the 13th Amendment was passed which made slavery illegal
