  2. DIGRAPH AI • When you see two letters together making only one sound, we call it a ______. (digraph) • Di and Bi = 2! (bicycle) Digraph ai makes the long (A) sound. It is regular for spelling in the initial and medial positions of words. (aim, air, wait, paint, stain)

  3. DIGRAPH AY Digraph aymakes the long (A) sound, too. However, it is regular for spelling only in the final position of words. (may, tray, play, stay, away)

  4. Long (A) Sound When you hear the long (a) sound in the initial or medial position of words, spell it with digraph ai. When you hear the long (a) sound in the final position of words, spell it with digraph ay. aim air snail paint Wait Spain play gray stay tray stray spray

  5. VOWEL Y Letter Y is an interesting letter! It can be a consonant, as in this word: yarn It can be a vowel and make more than one sound. In this lesson, we will focus on vowel Y in the final position of words, making the long (E) sound. When you hear a long (E) sound in the final position of words, spell it with vowel Y. (candy, mercy, study, hungry, country)

  8. PREFIX UN- un = not or opposite Keywords: unhappy, unfair

  10. Vowel Suffix -OLOGY -ology = study of (Greek origin) Keywords = geology, biology, zoology Usually a noun.

  11. ROOT (WORD PART) BIO Bio = life (Greek origin) Keywords = biography, biology, antibiotic

  12. ROOT (WORD PART) GRAPH Graph = to write or draw (Greek origin) Often combined with vowel y making the long (e) sound: graphy Keywords = biography, photograph, photography
