West Asia issues/contacts (cont’d) • The Regional Conference on Dust and Dust Storms 20-22 November, 2012- Sheraton , Kuwait (Under the Patronage of First Deputy Prime Minister Chairman of Higher Council of Environment) • Official invitation to the WMO Secretariat; Participation: Drs Terblanche and Nickovic • Recommendations • Regular meetings of dust and dust storm conference every two years • WMO to perform a survey to identify the existing observation and forecasting facilities. • WMO proposes establishing a new SDS-WAS for West Asia to satisfy needs for providing/improving observations/forecasting capabilities in the region • Meeting with the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) • Responsibility of countries in the region to agree on the way of collaboration (a single or a distributed centre; which country (countries) to host a centre (centres)).

Cooperation with other UN organizations - UNEP • A support from the West Asian UNEP office • A short-term project to develop an implementation plan – needs for establishing a new WA SDS-WAS node • Dr Cuevas to be engaged • A technical UNEP/WMO SDS conference (~May 2013) to discuss further steps

SDS-WAS Research Implementation Plan • Postponed deadline for final draft (early Spring 2013) • To be reviewed by the Regional Nodes partners\ • To be submitted to WWRP/JSC (July 2013) for approval • Updated regulations for the RSG and Steering Committee membership • Emphasizing establishing the SDS-WAS Trust Fund
