  1. Assessment of air pollution and resident urinary 1-OHP of communities surrounding the thermal power plant and steel mill Yun-Jung Chan, Chang-Chuan Chan Institute of Occupational Medicine and Industrial Hygiene, National Taiwan University College of Public Health INTRODUCTION RESULTS and DISCUSSIONS Many studies indicated that industrial parks might emit a lot of air pollutants and increase specific adverse health effect and cancer risk. Besides, recent studies have associated the air pollutants such as particulate matter, VOCs, heavy metals, PAHs, dioxins and so on with impaired health. However, the study area is around several industrial parks, such as steel plant, thermal power plant and petrochemical plant. The aim of the study is (1) To establish a exposure profile of VOCs, heavy metals, dioxins and PAHs on populations before extending construction start. (2) To compare concentration of VOCs, heavy metals, dioxins and PAHs between impact area and reference area. (3) To assess health risk of VOCs, heavy metals, dioxins, PAHsandurinary 1-OHP among the populations. In TVOC, most of the concentration in nighttime are higher than daytime, and the most abundant VOC is toluene. Concentration of PM is typical in this study area. The highest concentration of PCDD/Fs in air in this study is found in E2, and gas phase dioxins are higher than particle phase dioxins. The concentration of PCDD/Fs in land is similar to general area in Taiwan except E2-1. MATERIALS and METHODS Sampling Site: We used ISCST3 model and walk-through survey to choose those sampling sites and sorted into two exposure areas and control areas which include 4 elementary schools, 1 kindergarten and 2 activity centers. Sampling Period: 2009/04/09~2009/04/17 Sampling Method: We used Harvard Impactor to collect Heavy metals, canister to collect VOCs and high-volume air sampler to collect PAHs and dioxins in Taichung. Harvard Impactors was collecting 1 weeks, 15 minutes per hour; Canister was collecting 12 hours in the daytime and nighttime; High-volume air sampler was collecting 72 hours.Wealsointerviewedaround1200subjectswholiveinthisfourareasandcollectedtheirurinesamples. Analysis Method: We were using GC-MS to analyze VOCs, PAHs and dioxins. And we will use HPLC-FLD to analyze urinary 1-OHP. Fig. 3.
