  1. MAGNETISM (Natural Source) Magnetism first observed in lodestone (an ore from the region of Magnesia) In North Carolina there is rich “magnetite” near Elk Park at the Cranberry Mine. It is now closed.

  2. Magnetism (Man Made) Magnets are made from special alloys and are much stronger than from natural ores. ALNICO (Aluminum, Nickel & Cobalt Alloy) Rare Earth Magnets are made by sintering: Iron, Neodymium and Cobalt or Samarium and Boron Ferrite Magnets from Barium or Strontium

  3. Magnets - Properties Magnets have two attracting regions North and South Poles North-seeking part is the north pole South-seeking part is the south pole Unlike poles - attract Like Poles - repel If broken, a magnet becomes two magnets.

  4. Magnetic Properties (continued) If a magnet is brought near a ferromagnetic material, an opposite oriented magnet is induced. Shown in red is a magnet, the ferromagnetic material is in green. N S N S

  5. Magnetic Properties (Cont’d) The force caused by each pole generates a magnetic field. (similarly represented as the electric field) The North Pole plays the analogous role of the positive charge. The test charge is also a north pole. The Earth’s north magnetic pole is the south pole of a magnet.

  6. Earth’s Magnetic Field The earth’s magnetic field enters perpendicular to the surface at the poles. It is only horizontal at the magnetic equator. At other locations on the earth there is a vertical component to the magnetic field. One uses a dip needle to determine the vertical angle of the magnetic field.

  7. Compass Properties A compass is a magnet suspended horizontally by a vertical axis. The poles on each side of the magnet will produce a torque if they are not aligned with the field. This torque produces motion of the compass until it aligns its long dimension with the horizontal component of the magnetic field.
