Magnetism • The Earth as a Magnet • Due to iron in its core, earth functions as a giant magnet • South Magnetic Pole aligns roughly with North Geographic Pole • Ferromagnetic Materials • Magnets attracted to:Iron, Cobalt, Nickel, iron alloys • Magnets not attracted to:Wood, Plastic, most non-metals • Compasses • A permanent magnet • Affected by magnetic fields… like the one around the earth
