The Cost of Political Campaigns

Rising campaign costs have changed how people campaign for public office, resulting in extensive fundraising activities, limited opportunities for average citizens to run, advantages for wealthy individuals, the development of Political Action Committees, and increased influence of special interest groups. This has led to calls for Campaign Finance Reform, which aims to place limits on individual contributions to political candidates and campaigns.

  1. The Cost of Political Campaigns

  2. Running for political office is expensive!

  3. This high cost of getting elected has changed how people campaign for public office. Lets list the ways!!

  4. Rising campaign costs have resulted in … (1) candidates conducting extensive fund-raising activities. What does that mean?

  5. It means people running for office spend a lot more time (and start earlier each year) raising money to pay for the campaign. If they already hold elected office, that means less of their time is spent on the current job.

  6. Rising campaign costs have resulted in … (2) opportunities to run for public office are limited. What does that mean?

  7. Since so much time and money is needed to run for office, many average people just simply don’t have the time or money available to run a campaign.

  8. Rising campaign costs have resulted in … (3) wealthy individuals who run for office having an advantage. What does that mean?

  9. They can spend their own money and not have to spend as much time raising money. They may also be more able to leave a job since they may not need the salary to support a family.

  10. Rising campaign costs have resulted in … (4) the development of Political Action Committees (PACs). What does that mean?

  11. To take advantage of a “loop-hole” in campaign finance laws, these groups began to form. They can raise and donate money to political parties far in excess of what individual people can do.

  12. Rising campaign costs have resulted in … (5) issue-oriented special interest groups having increased influence. What does that mean?

  13. These special interest groups try to convince all candidates to support their side of a certain issue. They can also raise money and contribute to campaigns making them a valuable money resource for candidates.

  14. The results of rising campaign costs have led people to call for ….

  15. Campaign Finance Reform • This is an effort to reform (change) campaign finance laws. • Limits are placed on the amount of money individual people may contribute to political candidates and campaigns
