Augmented reality: Adds virtual/ computer-generated objects Happens in a real environment Involves the user Works in real time Blends virtual and real objects Can be used in many areas from navigation to education What is Augmented Reality?

Augmented Reality vs. Virtual Reality Augmented Reality (AR) Alters our perception of the world Enhances the real environment using computer generated objects User continues to be in touch with the real world while interacting with virtual objects Blends virtual objects with the real world Virtual Reality (VR) • Alters our perception of the world • Creates a virtual environment using computer generated objects • User is not in touch with the real world and is immersed in a virtually generated environment • Remains isolated in the virtual world Milgram’s reality/virtuality continuum

  4. Navigation: GPS and other navigation systems Tourism: Recreating real objects and locations from the past. Military: Simulations and navigation in-combat Medical Field: Enhance X-rays, MRI scans, neurosurgery and allow surgeons to hone their skills Gaming: Places parts of the game in the real world, an example is the  Zombie Shoot AR game Maintenance: Can be used to provide additional information on the area being repaired Entertainment: Companies like LEGO provide information on their products with special tags Advertising: Used by companies, like Quiznos, to advertise their business Promotion: Used to help enhance the products of different companies. Education: In education, AR is more student led and motivating, unlocks new ways of learning, and helps boost attention and enjoyment in learning. Applications of Augmented Reality

Situated Learning theory: People learn naturally while going through activities Augmented Reality & Diverse Learners Augmented Reality in Education Self-determination theory: Learning occurs through motivation • Auditory Learners: Voice recordings and other audio can be overlaid for auditory learners • Kinesthetic learners: The tactile interaction with virtual objects in real environment using mobile devices can provide learners with hands on learning experience • Visual Learners: AR 3D models and images that pop out can be viewed from various angles Flow Theory: When people are in activities with a purpose, there is a better chance that they will stick with it Augmented Reality & Learning Theories

  6. Benefits of using Augmented Reality in Education Aug That! carried out tests to find the impact of AR in the education of Grades 1– 8 students. The group that was taught using AR scored 30-70% higher in the posttests than their pretests, while the group using traditional methods scored only 10-15% higher. 30-70% higher scores

AR can help students with disabilities have a better learning experience AR storybooks help improve reading comprehension of students who usually find it hard to understand what they are reading AR can help motivate and engage students, who find it hard to work in a normal learning environment. Overlays can be designed to act as tools that assist students with physical disabilities, with captions and audio Head-mounted displays can be used, rather than hand-held devices, acting as a hands-free device Head mounted devices can use speech recognition and other methods, to allow students to experience AR in forms suited to their needs. Teachers in an interview said that students with ADD become more motivated when they use AR Augmented Reality in Special Education

  8. Technology training may be required for teachers to program their own AR activities and bring the best out of AR in education. Although AR content is usually delivered using simple mobile devices, large AR devices may be uncomfortable, hard to wear, and embarrassing, which takes away from the learning experience. There may be technical difficulties in acquiring AR content due to calibration issues. As AR is immersive and engaging, care should be taken while planning outside activities to ensure safety of students. Stress, frustration and brain overload may occur if too much information is taken in Limitations and challenges

  9. The Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) uses augmented reality in their Future of Interactive Learning (FOIL) program. High school students around Canada, using the Augmented reality app, BlippAR will explore Canada’s history in interesting ways to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday Brainspace is a Canadian magazine that allows children to experience education interactively in their magazines, through AR Quiver, an educational AR app is opening up an educational portal, for teachers to use AR in their classrooms.
