Notes for students • Repayment contributions made only when earning over £21,000 pa. • Contributions are taken like tax, via the payroll. • No-on will every chase them for the cash – contributions are taken off before they receive their salary. • The more financially successful they are, the more they will contribute. • If they lose their job or their income is reduced, so are their contributions. • Contributions stop after 30 years, even if they have not contributed the full amount. • The student loan is not a debt, it is more like a tax, could be called a graduate tax or graduate contribution; it does not go on credit files.
