  3. Client Background • Nathan was born with spina-bifida; a birth defect that prevents the backbone and spinal canal from closing before birth. This causes him to have a weak torso. • Nathan has no control over his legs, and has sole use of his left arm. • He presents with hydrocephally, and has a cerebral shunt to drain excess fluid. • Nathan is also cognitively impaired and has slight autism.

  4. Purpose for Projects • Nathan’s parents want him to enjoy the sensation of movement, as well as have some independence in his choices of auto-locomotion and music in his room. • These projects are aimed at allowing Nathan to enjoy the pleasures often experienced by boys his age

  5. Smart Kart • Adjusted turning radius - Adjusted tie rod attachment to be closer to the turning axis allowing for a larger range in motion

  6. Smart Kart • Replaced corroded circuit board with Chipkit max32 integrated circuit board - Interfaces more appropriately with power supply and components

  7. Smart Kart • Replaced biaxial joystick on Nathan's side • Took out xbox controller on passenger side -Utilize rotational potentiometer for steering - Uniaxial joystick for throttle and brake

  8. Mobile Stander • Added left handed One Arm Drive mechanism to mobile stander -Mechanism normally designed for wheelchair wheels and frame

  9. Mobile Stander • Extended Lever arm and main support shaft • Extended width of cushioning pads

  10. iHome Remote • Built iPad interface that allows Nathan to choose desired playlist -Chooses from his favorites: -Big Bird -Elmo -Barney

  11. iHome Remote • Uses Apple Airport Express to communicate from iPad to iHome • Buttons on iPad app interface with the media library and play songs from the specified playlists in a random order

  12. iHome Remote • Implemented Apple's "Xcode" program to design and build the remote app -Objective C and Cocoa Touch languages

  13. Porch Glider • Added support planks and casters • Added padding • Added seatbelts
