Education & Training Division Mission • Nurtures an exchange of views and information on matters related to education & training • Links the academic, industrial, and governmental communities • Involves educators, trainers, and students working together • Enriches their professional development • Educates the general public • Advances nuclear science and engineering

Education & Training Division Objectives • Provide leadership in identifying and addressing issues that impact the education and training dimensions of nuclear science and technology. • In accordance with the stated policy of the Society, hold meetings and other forums for an exchange of views and information on all matters related to the education and training dimensions of nuclear science and technology. • Provide a focus for serving the professional needs of nuclear education and training communities. • Provide a mechanism for recognizing accomplishments of members of the education and training communities through recommendations for the conferring of Division and Society awards. • Provide means for effective dissemination of technical and other information relevant to the education and training communities within nuclear science and technology.

Education & Training Division Contributions to ANS • ANS Position Statements • Position Statement # 53: Research and Training Reactors • Complete, available for Board approval • Considering internally initiated position statements on nuclear education and on nuclear training • Special Committee on the Nuclear Workforce • Participated in planning that resulted in this committee • Considering facilitating its future work as a sub-committee of ETD • Non-Meeting Publications • Initiated and contributed to special training issue of Nuclear News for January 2004 and distribution at Conference on Nuclear Training and Education • Planning for a special education and training issue of Nuclear Technology

Education & Training Division Services to Membership • Scholarships • Sponsor Lamarsh Scholarship • Contributing annually to achieve Full Funding • Peer Recognition/Awards • Compton Award for Excellence in Teaching • Training Excellence and Training Pioneer Awards • Student Support • Glasstone Award for Top Student Section • Financial Support for Annual Student Conference • Annual Student Design Contest for Undergraduate and Graduate categories • Sponsor student sessions in Summer Meetings with Best Paper financial awards for each session and certificates for all participants

Education & Training Division Meetings • National Meeting Participation • Base of three sessions/National Meeting plus two or more special sessions • Eleven sessions in New Orleans including two special sessions, two panels, one co-sponsored, and two in cooperation with the Public Information Committee • Four to seven planned for Pittsburgh (Variation due to unknown number of student submissions) • Ten for Washington including three with Public Information • Class II Topical • Second Conference on Nuclear Training and Education (CONTE) scheduled for Orlando, February 9 -12, 2004 • Planned for every two years • 175 – 200 attendees • Includes a major recruiting effort since this is geared for an under represented constituency • ANS Membership Booth, distribution of ETD Newsletter and Nuclear News

Summary • New Bylaws in place with both succession planning and detailing of officer responsibilities • Significant improvement in National Meeting participation due to three-session base • Increased opportunities for student participation in National Meetings • Improving involvement with National Committees (PI, PWANS, NEED, SP&P, Student Sections, Membership, SCoNW) • Encouraging more participation/membership from the Training Community through CONTE and presentations at Regional training community meetings • One/Five Year Tactical/Strategic Plans in place
