  1. American Nuclear SocietyBiology and Medicine Division Presentation to the ANS Board of Directors Elisabete De Nadai Fernandes, Chair November 12, 2008, Reno, Nevada

  2. BMD Mission • The Biology and Medicine Division (BMD) of the American Nuclear Society focuses on the biological applications and medical uses of the atom. • Members focus on the application and development of nuclear technology for the life sciences, as well as the impact of such technology on society. Areas of interest include neutron, photon, and charged-particle applications, dosimetry, radiographic and radioisotope imaging, radionuclide production, bone and tissue dosimetry, biological effects of radiation exposure, and other related subjects.

  3. Officers (1-yr term) Chair: Elisabete A. 4. BMD Membership Trend

  5. BMD Budget • Expenditures are directed towards student awards, young scientist development awards and our embedded topical meeting. • Income from membership allocation and Class I meeting distribution. • Excess funds are $10,736 as of August, 2008.

  6. Division Planning • Strategic Plan • Our strategic plan is under active development and completion is expected before June, 2009. • Succession Planning • Succession planning is a big part of our strategic plan. The Biology and Medicine Division is experiencing a renewal based on the participation of the newly formed Computational Medical Physics Working Group and we have plans to incorporate working group leaders into the mainstream leadership of our division.

  7. BMD Communications • WebSite - http://bmd.ans.org/ updated October, 2008. • Newsletters – published in January and October, 2008.

  8. BMD Contributions to ANS • Active participation with updating position statements on Radon in Homes, Food Irradiation and Health Effects of Low Level Radiation • Participation with Other Professional Societies BMD members also members in: • AAPM (American Association of Physicists in Medicine) • HPS (Health Physics Society and local chapters) • ACS (American Chemical Society) • AOAC (Association of Official Analytical Chemists) • SNM (Society of Nuclear Medicine) • Computational Medical Physics Working Group

  9. Computational Medical Physics Working Group • Formed in 2005 and co-sponsored by BMD and MCD, the CMPWG is a multidisciplinary group which serves to promote the advancement of computational tools, experimental data, and enabling technologies which are applicable to clinical problems in medical and health physics • The applications include computational benchmarks on phantoms and detectors, large scale optimization, deterministic and stochastic approaches to radiation therapy and diagnostic problems.

  10. Computational Medical Physics Working Group • Website: http://cmpwg.ans.org. • Joint program development with sponsoring Divisions • Sponsoring one session November, 2008 entitled “Advances and Issues in Computational Modeling.” • Sponsoring the 3rd CMPWG workshop at Georgia Tech in September, 2009 and are already planning the 4th workshop for 2011 in South Korea.

  11. BMD Services to Membership • Professional Development • Tutorial Session “Neutron Activation Analysis – Status after Five Decades”, Annual Meeting, June 12, 2008. • Scholarships • BMD contributed to the endowment of the Vogt Scholarship Award. Funding efforts may go to an increase of this award • Peer Recognition/Awards • BMD supports the International Committee on Activation Analysis (ICAA) Young Scientist Award both financially and through member participation on selection committee. • Student Support • BMD supports the ANS National Student conference by providing funds for best paper(s) in a BMD track. • BMD supports the student travel fund for the ANS meetings.

  12. BMD Meetings • National Meeting Participation • Annual Meeting 2008 • Neutron Depth Profiling: Facilities and Applications • BMD General Session • Neutron Activation Analysis: Status after Five Decades-Tutorial • Winter Meeting 2008 • Advances and Issues in Computational Phantom Modeling • (Anti) Coincidence Instruments and Software for Activation Analysis and Other Applications • BMD General Session • Annual Meeting 2009 • Nuclear-Based Imaging for Medical Diagnosis and Therapy • BMD General Session

  13. BMD Meetings • Topical Meeting Participation • Class I • Methods and Applications of Radiochemistry, MARC-VII, April 6-11, 2006. • Methods and Applications of Radiochemistry, MARC-VIII, April 5-10, 2009. • Class II • Computational Medical Physics Working Group Workshop, CMPWG-II, September 30-October 3, 2007. • Computational Medical Physics Working Group Workshop, CMPWG-III, October 7-10, 2009. • Computational Medical Physics Working Group Workshop, CMPWG-IV, 2011.

  14. BMD Meetings • Topical Meeting Participation • Class III • Isotopes for Medicine and Industry, ANS Annual Meeting, June, 2008. • Class IV • Modern Trends in Activation Analysis, MTAA-12, September 16-21, 2007 • Modern Trends in Activation Analysis, MTAA-13, March 6-10, 2011.

  15. BMD Vitality Measures – CY 2007

  16. Summary • The BMD has improved from three green fields two years ago at our last board presentation to eight in the Vitality Measures. • The entire category of “division service to membership” is green due to our tutorials, scholarships, awards and support for students. • The embedded topical in June, 2008, a first for the division, was very successful. • Focus on planning for the future and incorporation of the CMPWG into the mainstream leadership of the division.
