  3. What is Trust? Essential ingredient in all human relationships - including ones with machines

  4. It is bad to • Trust too much • Trust too little • Trust the wrong things Possibility for Trust Attack • deliberately or accidentally against the enemy • accidentally against ourselves

  5. Contexts include: • Education • Commerce • I.T. • Military Different authors use the same jargon to mean different things

  6. Domains • Term has different definitions in different contexts • Context of setting for trust • Reason for trust (banking) • Area where trust exists (IT)

Domain as Context for Trust • Interpersonal trust - between individuals • Organisational trust - in organisational context • Online trust (3 meanings) • interpersonal/organisational when online • in online entities/web-sites/products • in online technology • Automation trust - in machines • Information trust - in information

  8. Domain as Reason for Trust • Guaranteed trust • e.g. guarantee from bank or referee • Actuarial trust • assessment of probability • Commercial systems tend to use both

  9. Domain as an Area Where Trust Exists • Domain is an IT term • “Domain of trust” = area where trust exists • Certification from one domain of trust to others

  10. Military Application of Trust • Trust within a small unit • Automation trust • Trust in the context of command and control • Political trust

  15. MoEs done for: • Make system appear not to work • Attack battle damage assessment • Make system appear dangerous • Maintain confidence in system • Attack appreciation of situation • Attack IFF • Degrade
