  1. IS GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER (GAD) AFFECTING YOUR RELATIONSHIP?

  2. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), or chronic worry,is a problem which can cause upset for the individual as well as stress and frustration for partners and the person’s other relationships. Those suffering from GAD may find it difficult to function normally at home, at work, or at school/university, as well as leading to feelings of guilt about the stress or strain being put on family members or their partner.

  3. The professional counsellors and psychologists at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling’s anxiety clinic in Newcastle are skilled and able to help deal with the problems that come with GAD and worry.  They are especially skilled in helping people improve the way they manage at home, at work and in their relationship.

  4. EXCESSIVE REASSURANCE SEEKING Although some degree of seeking support is perfectly normal in relationships, those suffering from GAD or excessive worry can sometimes become over- dependent on the other’s reassurance.   This might manifest as behaviours such as always needing to be around their partner, needing constant reassurance, being fearful that their partner will be unfaithful or end the relationship, and worrying about how they would cope alone if the other left.   Such behaviour might also manifest as negative thoughts about the relationship as well as the person’s health, future or general situation. This pattern of behavioural can occur with family members as well as in relationships, and cause similar problems there.

  5. AVOIDANCE Healthy communication about, and dealing with, problems can be particularly challenging for a sufferer of GAD or chronic worry.    When a situation arises in a relationship that needs to be discussed, a person with GAD may choose to avoid facing or discussing it rather than addressing it in a helpful way. Anxiety can also make it difficult for people with GAD or worry to discuss their feelings due to fear of what might happen if they do.

  6. LACK OF TRUST Trust is the bedrock of any relationship, but trust can be difficult for people with anxiety and GAD.   If a person is already feeling anxious or insecure, a lack of self-esteem and self- doubt can make them believe that their partner will not remain loyal. This may result in unhealthy behaviours such as checking up on a partner, reading their messages, emails or phone contacts, or even “testing” their partner to seek reassurance about their commitment to the relationship.
