Today’s Activities Today’s Targets • Warm-up: Who is the most moral character in the story and why? • Review journal requirements • Review homework and journal assignment change • You should have read to p. 193 • Small group discussion • Read chapter 20 and discuss • HOMEWORK: • journal due Friday • By Monday read to p. 257 (journal due Tuesday/Thursday) • Comprehension of text • Literary analysis- • Understanding characters and themes

  3. Journal requirements reviewed • Summaries • Character and conflict sections • More purposeful selection of quotes • More depth of analysis of character and conflict • Don’t just list

  4. Discussion questions • Is Matt really the monster that everyone thinks he is? How so or how not? • Celia describes El Patron as a bandit. How has El Patron stolen the lives of those living on the estate? Which characters are his partners in evil? • Why do people support El Patron? Explain and provide examples. • How does Matt imitate El Patron’s power when he demands a birthday kiss from Maria? Why is Maria so humiliated by his demand? How does Matt feel the crowd’s disapproval? Explain. • Tam Lin tells Matt, “If you are kind and decent, you grow into a kind and decent man. If you’re like El Patron…just think about it.” Is Matt like El Patron? How or how not? • Up until this point of the book, Matt has had an idea of why he was created and why he is different from the clone on the bed. What does he think that his purpose is, why El Patron would spend so much energy on him, have him taught, etc.? • Review pages 190-192. Matt begins to come to a realization about his real purpose. What is it and why does he struggle so much with this thought?
