  1. Neptune By: Marcus Azimi, Eddie Estrada, and Zach Schroeder

  2. Basic Information • Tilt: 28.32˚ • Direction of rotation on its axis: Counter Clockwise • Length of Day: 367.49 (Earth) Days • Length of Year: 164.79 (Earth) years • Distance from Sun: 30.1 AU • Temperature:-200˚C • Mass compared to Earth: 17x the Size of Earth • Density compared to Earth: 1/3x Dense compared to Earth • AtmosphereComposition: 80% Hydrogen, 19% Helium, Trace amount of Methane. • Core Composition: Iron, Nickel, Silicate, etc.

  3. Founders Galileo first saw Neptune, however he said that it was a star, not a planet. The French mathematician Urbain Le Verrier and the English mathematician John Couch Adams both made predictions that a new planet would be. Then, Johann Gottfried Galle actually found the planet in 1846. English and French astronomers battled over who actually made the discovery, and there are still defenders of each claim to this day. Urban Le Verrier got the credit for it though. (Galle was robbed!)

  4. Rings • Rings: Yes, Composition is Ice particles coated with Silicate • 3 Groups of Rings called the 3 arcs of Neptune • Adam Rings- Narrow (63,000 km from Neptune) • Le VerrierRing-Central (53,000 km from Neptune) • Galle Ring- Broad, Faint (42,000 km from Neptune)

  5. Triton • Triton is Neptune’s largest moon and is thought to be captured from the Kuiper Belt • Discovered on October 10th 1846 by astronomer William Lassell • Triton is special because it has a retrograde orbit, an orbit opposite of the planets rotation • Diameter: 2700km • Atmosphere is mostly composed of nitrogen • Surface temperature is -391 degrees Fahrenheit • Surface of moon is a layer of frosted nitrogen covering an icy mantle with a cratered surface and volcanic plains • One of the coolest objects in the solar system • One of the few solar objects that is volcanically active • Voyager 2 flew past it and noted its surface temperature and also discovered it having active geysers

  6. Other Moons • 13 moons • Triton • Nereid • Larissa • Naiad • Thalassa • Despina • Galatea • Proteus • Halimede • Sao • Psamathe • Laomedeia • Neso

  7. Big blue spot • Large storm on the surface of Neptune • Originally discovered by voyager II • Hubble passed later and no blue spot was found • Proves that the storms are reoccurring/ not a continuous session of misery.

  8. Other physical features • Planet is Blue due to the frozen methane in the atmosphere • Frozen hydrogen is the most abundant element in the atmosphere however, helium, methane and nitrogen are also involved as well. • Has geysers that are active, they spew frozen nitrogen. • Its diameter is 4 times the size of earth.

  9. Visitations by probe • Voyager II- Launched 1977- Fly By: 1989 (12 years later) • New Probe “Neptune Orbiter”- No launch date has been given

  10. Interesting facts • Neptune has an earthlike gravity field. • Neptune supposedly has water on it. Marcus isn't convinced of this though. • Is considered the “twin of Uranus” • It takes 12 years to get to Neptune from earth. • It is named after the Roman god of Water.
