  1. Chapter 13Teaching and Learning with Technology in Music and Art Instruction Brittany Henderson

  2. Music Quote Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything. Plato

  3. Art Quote An arts education helps build academic skills and increase academic performance, while also providing alternative opportunities to reward the skills of children who learn differently. Gavin Newsom

  4. 3 Important Concepts of Media Art • Active engagement • A personal connection to the task to inspire learning • The development of art that brings value to their community Peppler. 2010

  5. Quote by Peppler “as educators are struggling to keep up with changing demands of this new digital era, new literacy theorists argue that our very definition of literacy is expanding to include any type of communicative interaction involving speaking, reading, listening, drawing, and writing with text in print and non-print forms.”

  6. National Standards for Art Education When describing issues, the standards insist on the following: That the transforming power of technology is a force not only in the economy but in the arts as well. The arts teach relationships between the use of essential technical means and the achievement of desired ends. The intellectual methods of the arts are precisely those used to transform scientific discovery into technology.

  7. Issues/Problems in Music Instruction • Redefining Music Literacy • Students who are discouraged by a requirement to learn notation-based theory can now participate in the school music program as both composers and performers with little, if any, ability to read music. • Training Teachers to Meet Music Standards • Teacherpreparation programs will have a difficult time making a case for including required technology courses in their curricula.

  8. Issues/Problems in Music Instruction • Downloading of Music Illegally • Less students are downloading music at all, now they can listen online for free (Pandora) • The Intersection of Popular Music, Technology, and Music Instruction • For different lesson, teachers need to have extensive knowledge of desktop music productions and live sound reinforcement- also needs to be familiar with culture and traditions of the type of music.

  9. Issues/Problems in Music Instruction • The Music director as Small Business Administrator • Music directors are always on the lookout for continuing or increased funding- to better improve their program.

  10. Issues/Problems in Art Instruction • Funding for Art Instruction • Funding is at an all-timelow, even teachers and administration are having to limit how much paper, ink, and copies are made. • Ethical Issues Associated with the use of Images and Other Materials • With taking images from the Internet, students need to be educated on citing everything they use, whether it be text, images, or sounds.

  11. Issues/Problems in Art Instruction • Accessing Images Used in Art Instruction • Schools filter so much online, and with doing so not only hide the bad pictures, but is also likely to take away many great unknown works of art.

  12. Issues/Problems in Art Instruction • The Challenge of Meeting Standards in Arts Instruction • Be able to: • communicate at the basic level in the four arts disciplines-dance, music, theater, visual • communicate proficiently in at least one art form • develop and present basic analysis of works of art from structural, historical, and cultural perspectives • Be able to relate various types of art knowledge and skills within and across the art discipline.

  13. Definitions • Auto-Tuning: • A unique vocal distortion technique made possible with vocal-editing software. • Computerized Kiln: • Oven for firing ceramic products that uses computers to perform automatically several operations; set required temperature, monitor length of firing time, and begin the process of cooling down and shutting off.

  14. Definitions • Morphing and Tweening: • Refers to an animation technique in which one image gradually turns into another. • Music Educators National Conference (MENC): • Professional Organization for music educators. • Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI): • A standard adopted by the electronic music industry for controlling devices that play music. • Music Literacy: • The ability to read standard music notation.

  15. Definitions • Notation Software: • Software that facilitates music making in the visual domain by allowing flexibility to music score and page setup, part extraction, text formatting, and other print-related issues. • Sequencer: • A device that facilitates music making in the aural domain by allowing users to record, edit, and play back digital audio and MIDI data. • Vocal Processing Software: • Allows users to make changes to the pitch and create interesting vocal distortions with recorded voice tracks.
