Isothermal humidification • What do they have in common? • Isothermal = humidification at a constant air temperature • Steam is produced by boiling water • The steam produced is demineralized; minerals are not carried over • The reservoir must be drained to manage the precipitated mineral and ion concentration

  14. Isothermal Humidification and Water • Water is known as the universal solvent. Minerals are dissolved from the geological location containing the water source. • The amount of dissolved solids in water is defined by the TDS concentration, Total Dissolved Solids • The most common water problem is hardness, expressed in the concentration of calcium carbonate, CaCO3 • High chlorides (Cl-) and unbalanced pH levels are also important to consider

Isothermal Humidification and Water • Why are drains necessary? • Calcium Carbonate • The solubility of calcium carbonate decreases as the water temperature increases • As the water is heated, calcium carbonate precipitates out and coats the surfaces of wetted components • Chlorides and pH imbalance • Low pH or high chlorides in the supply water can deteriorate metal components when allowed to over-concentrate

Fill valve Steam outlet Water level Control Skimmer port Heating element Drain valve Dri-SteemVapormist • How do they work? • An electrical current flows through a resistive element to convert electricity into heat. • The resistive element is submersed and heat is transferred to the water. • The advantage of this process is no dependence between steam production and water conditions. • All water types can be used and steam is generated quickly.

Fill valve Steam outlet Water level Control Skimmer port Heating element Drain valve Dri-SteemVapormist • How is water managed? • There are two drain modes: Skim cycles and complete tank drains (full tank blowdown). • Skim cycle: the water level is raised to the skimmer port and surface water is drained from the system. This occurs during filling and the skim duration is fixed. • Full tank blowdown: the entire contents of the tanks are drained. The intervals are proportional to the steam output.

  19. How do resistive element humidifiers manage water? How much water is drained? • Skim cycle • The skim cycle duration is fixed. From experimental testing, the manufacturer drain rate setting is 36% of the steam output rate. • Full tank blowdown (FTBD) • The full tank blowdown intervals are fixed. The intervals are based on a defined steam output. From experimental testing, the steam weigh to blowdown is 25,000 lbs.

Fill Valve Fill Box Tank Drain Pump Heat Exchanger Nortec GSTC/SETC • How do they work? • There are two energy sources: gas combustion or pressurized steam. • The heat exchanger is submersed and heat is transferred directly to the water. • The same advantage as resistive element: the process has no dependence between steam production and water conditions. • Gas-fired and steam exchange humidifiers are ideal for handling large humidification loads with minimal operating costs.

The blowdown intervals are proportional to the steam output. • Full tank blowdown: the entire contents of the tanks are drained. The intervals are also proportional to the steam output.

The Nortec drain rate setting for GSTC and SETC humidifiers is 25% of the steam output rate. • Full tank blowdown (FTBD) • The full tank blowdown intervals is fixed. The intervals are based on a defined weighed steam output. For the GSTC/STC, the FTBD is set to drain the tank 72 hours of weighed steam output.

Steam outlet Electrodes Potable water Drain Nortec NHTC Nortec Cylinder • How do they work? • Dissolved minerals (ions) are used to conduct electricity between submerged electrodes. • Pure water is an insulator; therefore heat is generated by the resistance (conductivity) of the water. • The water becomes the heating element.

How do electrode humidifiers work? • Conductivity • The supply water conductivity varies with the water source • The higher the total dissolved solids in the supply water, the higher its conductivity • Nortec electrode humidifiers can operate on a water conductivity of 150 μS/cm to 1250 μS/cm. • The average conductivity of water in North America is 300 μS/cm.

The drain rate is proportional to the water conductivity: Drain rates are optimized by comparison with a constant (Toptimal); there the drain percentage is proportional to the conductivity of the water. Conclusion • All humidifier technologies must drain water to manage the build up of precipitated minerals and harmful ions • With the exception of Nortec electrode, all isothermal humidifiers manufacturers recommend mid-season inspections to fine tune drain rates • Nortec electrode humidifiers automatically adjusts drain rates to supply water conditions • For average water conditions, Nortec electrode is the most water efficient isothermal humidifier
