  2. Location • 4 types of Grasslands • Prairies in North America • Steppes in between Ukraine and Russia • Pampas in Argentina and Uruguay • Veldts in South Africa

  3. Climate and Rainfall • Temperatures vary greatly between Summer and Winter • The temperature can sometimes reach 100 degrees • Rain usually occurs in the late spring and early summer • Yearly average of precipitation is 20-35 inches (55-95 cm), mostly snow

  4. Plants • Trees and large shrubs are rarely found • Many species of grass • Purple needlegrass, wild oats, foxtail, ryegrass, and buffalo grass • Wild flowers grow well • Asters, blazing stars, goldenrods, sunflowers, clovers, and wild indigo

Animals • Lack of shelter from predators • Abundance of grass for food • Dominant animal is the Ungulate • mammal with hoofs, like horses and deer • Little diversity of animals • Bison, antelope, birds, gophers, prairie dogs, coyotes, and insects • Most animals have adapted to treeless prairie by digging burrows
