Intro To Temperate Grasslands • Antarctica is the only continent that doesn’t have a Temperate Grasslands. • In Asia they’re know as steppes, in Africa they’re know as savannas, and in the US we call them prairies or plains. • Temperate Grasslands are in the middle of being a Forest or Desert. If they receive more rain they would become a Forest, Less would become a Deserts. • Temperate Grasslands have a growing and a dormant season.

  5. Animal Life .1 • The animals that live in the Temperate Grasslands are.. * American Bison * Black-Tailed Prairie Dog * Greater Rhea * African Lion * Black-Footed Ferret

  6. American Bison • The American Bison lives in the Great Plains of North America. • Males can weigh up to 2,000. • Females can weigh up to 1,100 pounds. • The average Life Span is 12-20 years.

  7. African Lion • The African Lion lives in the grasslands of Southern Africa. • One or two males will dominate each pride. • Lionesses weigh up to 400 pounds, And grow to 6 feet long. • Lions weigh up to 550 pounds, And grow up to 8 feet long.

  8. Black-Footed Ferret • The Black-Footed Ferret lives in the Great Plains of North America. • They can weigh up to 2 pounds. • They can also reach up to 2 feet long. • Black-Footed Ferret is on the Federal Endangered Species.

  9. Plant Life 2. ( American Prairie ) • The plants that live in the American Prairie are… * Black Walnut * Basswood * Western Sandcherry * Squawbush Sumac * Turkey Grass * Purple Lovegrass * Porcupine Grass * Switch Grass

  10. Western Sandcherry • When compared to other shrubs the Western Sandcherry is relatively small and short-lived. • When the Western Sandcherry is fully matured they grow it 7-10 feet tall, and the width would be 6-8 feet. • The leaves go to Red , Dark Red , or purple through the seasons.

  11. Basswood • The Basswood is nicknamed ‘ The Bee Tree ‘ because of bees always being near it for it’s flowers. • They can reach up to 130 feet high when fully matured. • Basswood trees have heart shaped leaves.

  12. Landscape/Habitat • Grasslands is mostly dry, grass and with few trees. • Grasslands are in both hot and cold areas. • Fire is a important abiotic in many types of

  13. Human Influence • Positive- The hunting of animals have been banned due to extinction • Positive- National parks have been created to preserve the grassland biome • Negative- Hundreds of animals are hunted for valuble body parts • Negative- fires which are started by humans

  14. Weather • Late spring and early summer precipitation usually occurs • Summer time temperature’s range around 100 degrees F • Winter time temperatures can range around a low of 40 degrees F

Warnings • Continued global warming could turn current marginal grasslands into deserts as rainfall patterns change • Development of urban areas is increasingly cutting into grassland habitat • Drought-hardy, cold-resistant, and herbicide-tolerant varieties of soybeans, wheat, and corn allow crops to expand into native grassland • Where only one crop is grown, pests and disease can spread easily, creating the need for potentially toxic pesticides
