  4. Intercultural mediator • Can give all the explanations and extra data needed. • Cultural, social or ideological nuances of each message. • Less neutral than the interpreter. • More involvement in the situation than interpreters.

  7. Do they continue their studies and training once they start working? • Depends on the person but this is not usual. • Some situations require specific preparation. • Some people want to keep well-informed and up-to-date.

  8. What communicative necessities are essential for immigrants? • Communicaton affects all aspects of life. • The main field is employment. • Administration is another important place where immigrants need communication.

Is there any protocol to achieve a good communication? • The protocol depends on two factors: - The professionalism of the interpreter or the mediator. - The education and culture of the client. • The communicative barrier marks the limits between the professional and the client. • The intercultural mediator has more resources to establish the communication.

  10. What are the obstacles that professionals face during the communication process? • Aspects related to language and culture. • Neutrality. • Involvement.

  11. What are the most common linguistic problems? • Depends on the sector in which the professional is working. • If the immigrant does not know the field the linguistic exchange will be more laborious. • Some concepts or realities of the host country can be unknown for the immigrant and have to be explained by the professional.

What are the most common cultural problems? • The location in which the immigrant lives in the host country. • The social and cultural knowledge of the immigrant. • A change of environment >> The type of environment in which the immigrant lived in his or her country and the type of environment where he or she lives in the host country.

  13. Are there any stereotypes in the communicative relations? • Yes. • The majority of them are related to culture. • There are also a lot of stereotypes related to religion.

  14. Which skills do interpreters and intercultural mediators need to do a good job? • Control of specific vocabulary and terminology of each field. • Ability to solve linguistic problems. • Sometimes the organization or administration provides the professional with help and information.

  15. Social worker • Takes care of the wellbeing of people that have difficulties in their daily lives. • Provides them with information and help. • Assists people in crisis situations, violence or loss, and people that have difficulties integrating into society.

  16. Social educator • Provides people with access to culture, wellbeing and participation in social life. • Works with people in very different environments that have social or adaptation problems and that feel alienated.

  18. Conclusion • Interpreting and mediation are a key necessity in the public services. • Nowadays, there are resources but there could be more and of a higher quality. • Professionals need access to as many tools as possible that can help them to do their job.
