Integrated Planning on Hydrogeophysical Data on a National Scale

This article discusses the integrated system for processing, interpretation, storage, and visualization of hydrogeophysical data on a national scale, including the geophysical database GERDA, the borehole database Jupiter, and the program package Aarhus Workbench. The motivation behind this integrated planning is to map groundwater resources and protection areas in Denmark. The article also highlights the data collection methods, such as TEM, PACES, CVES, and seismic data, and introduces the Aarhus Workbench program for data processing, inversion, visualization, and advanced analysis. The article emphasizes the importance of the integrated system for efficient management of data and decision-making in groundwater planning.

  2. Outline • Motivation • Integrated system for management of data • The system • The geophysical database GERDA • The borehole database Jupiter • The program package Aarhus Workbench • The 3D visualisation program Geoscene3D • Summary

  3. Motivation Groundwater mapping on a national scale • Areas with special drinking water interests are mapped with respect to resources and protection • These areas cover 40 % (17.500 km2) of Denmark

  4. Motivation Groundwater mapping on a national scale • Areas with special drinking water interests are mapped with respect to resources and protection • These areas cover 40 % (17.500 km2) of Denmark • The mapping programme started in 1999 and will run until about 2015 • The programme is financed by a fee of 3 cents pr m3 of consumed water • The total cost is about 200 million Euro • Of this is spent for about 50 million Euro on geophysical mapping • The programme was administrated by the counties till 2007 and now by 7 local offices of The Agency for Spatial and Environmental Planning (Ministry of the Environment) • The main part of the work is carried out by private companies

  5. Motivation TEM data Data are collected by ground based systems since 1993 Data are collected by the airborn SKYTEM system since 2003 TEM data cover 10,585 km2

  6. Motivation PACES data Data are collected by a mobile resistivity system 1200 km PACEP data are collected until 1998 8700 km PACES data are collected since 1998 The data cover about 2500 km2

  7. Motivation CVES data Data are typical collected with 5 m electrode spacing 3600 km CVES data are collected

  8. Motivation Seismic data Data are collected with high resolution seismic systems About 1300 km of seismic data are collected

  9. Motivation All data TEM PACES MEP Seismics

Integrated system for management of data GERDA database Danish national database for shallow geophysical data hosted by GEUS GERDA is established in 1998-2000 GERDA is under continuous development GERDA has a web page: http://gerda.geus.dk with information and documentation, upload of data, search and download of data. There is open access to data

  14. Integrated system for management of data Jupiter database In 1926 a well data archive for water supply-related wells was founded at the Geological survey. Later other types of shallow wells are also reported to the archive. The wells are now registered in the national database, Jupiter, hosted by GEUS The database contains information about more than 300.000 boreholes Jupiter has a web page: http://www.geus.dk/jupiter for search and download of data There is open access to the data
