  2. Monday, September 14th • Today you need: • Pen/pencil • Copy of “Just the Facts” from back of the room • Today’s Topic: “Just the Facts” • Reminder: Signed syllabus due tomorrow.

  3. Just the Facts • Test: Thursday the 24th • You must get a 90% on the test • First attempt = A • Second attempt = B • Third and subsequent attempts = C • Retakes must take place during Grizzly Period

  4. Forms of Government • Dictatorship- One person rule; ruler has total control • Oligarchy- Small group has total control • Direct Democracy- All citizens have equal power in decision making • Representative Democracy- people elect representatives who hold decision making power

  5. US = Federal Republic • Federal comes from federation • Joining of self-governing states • Republic means ruled with the consent of the governed

  7. Constitution • Outlines government structure and scope • Current Constitution is the 2nd in US history (1788) • 7 articles- outline powers • 27 amendments

  8. Article 1- Legislature • Congress is responsible for making the laws • Impose taxes • Borrow money for the US • Regulate commerce • Citizenship laws • Coin money • Establish post offices • Declare war • Raise armies and navies • Rules for government • Etc.

  9. Bicameral? • Means 2 houses House of Representatives Senate

House of Representatives 25 years old 2 year terms No term limits Must be a citizen for 7 years Currently: Rick Larsen (D), 2nd District Senate 30 years old 6 year term No term limits Must be a citizen for 9 years Currently: Patty Murray (D) Maria Cantwell (D) Want to be a Federal Congress(wo)man?

  11. House of Representatives • 435 members • Based on population of constituents (census) • 5 members from territories within the US • Vote in committee but not on the floor • WA state has 9 districts

  12. Senate • 100 total (2 per state) • Vice President is the tie breaking vote

  13. House of Representatives Power of impeachment Can initiate taxation bills Senate Power to try impeached and removed from office Consents to presidential appointments Ratify treaties Federal House vs. Senate

  14. Checks and Balances • Legislation must be passed through both houses before being submitted to the president

  15. Game Time • Red card = Senate • Blue card = House of Representatives • Do not raise card until I say go • Sit down if you have the incorrect answer • Prize for the last ones standing
