  2. Opening Adverb Definition: An adverb at the beginning of a sentence. All adverbs give information about an action: • Some tell how (quickly, slowly, rapidly) • Some tell when (now, then, yesterday) • Some tell where (overhead, nearby, underneath) A comma always follows an opening adverb!

  3. Examples of Opening Adverbs How:Unfairly, we poked fun at him, often in his presence.While I Was Gone, Sue Miller When:Then, Harry felt as though an invisible pillow had quite suddenly been pressed over his mouth and nose.Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, J. K. Rowling Where:Outside, I found a taxi for her. Sentences can contain single or multiple opening adverbs.

  4. PRACTICE: Write six sentences illustrating the use of opening adverbs. Write two of each kind: how, when, and where. Share with your row partner. Be prepared to share your sentence with the class.
