  2. Delayed Adjective Definition: An adjective placed after the word described. Like opening adjectives, delayed adjectives can be a single word or the first word in an adjective phrase. Commasalways punctuate a delayed adjective—one comma if it occurs at the end of the sentence, two if earlier in the sentence.

  3. Examples of Delayed Adjectives: Single delayed adjectives: People under the helicopter ducked down, afraid, as if they were being visited by a plague or a god. Animal Dreams, Barbara Kingsolver Multiple delayed adjectives: Each snowflake was different, Sister Zoe said, like a person, irreplaceable and beautiful.“Snow,” Julia Alvarez Delayed adjective phrase: A dog came bounding among us with a loud volley of barks, and leapt round us, wild with glee at finding so many human beings together.“A Hanging,” George Orwell

  4. PRACTICE: Write six sentences illustrating the use of delayed adjectives. You should try two of each: single, multiple, and phrase. Share with your row partner. Be prepared to share with the class.
