Actions of Worship • Responsibility not to quench the Spirit • Role of the Holy Spirit in believers • regenerates sinners – Jn. 3:6-8 • transforms spiritual affections – Titus 3:5 • frees from slavery to sin – Rom. 8:3-9 • places us into body of Christ – Rom. 8:15 • permanently resides in us – Rom. 8:9,11,14 • pours God’s love in our hearts - Rom. 5:5 • gifts us for spiritual service – 1 Cor. 12:4-10 • seals for all eternity 2 Cor. 1:22 • sanctifies us – Rom. 15:16

Actions of Worship • Responsibility not to quench the Spirit • Spirit-initiated works in sanctification • Illuminates the Word of God – 1 Cor.2:10 • Brings believers into intimacy with God – Rom. 8:15-16 • Glorifies Christ to believers and makes them more like Christ – 2 Cor. 3:18 • Helps us know God’s will – Eph. 5:17,18 • Grants strength for sanctification – Eph. 3:16

Actions of Worship • Responsibility to respond to God’s Word • Despise – consider absolutely nothing • Prophetic utterances – spoken or written • Brand-new revelation directly from God - Luke 2:29 • Reiterating a divine proclamation already recorded – Luke 3:5,6 • Refers to God’s written Word – 2 Peter 1:20-21 Rom. 12:6 ; Jude 3,20 ; Josh. 1:8

  7. Actions of Worship • Responsibility to be discerning • Examine – test for authenticity • Everything – all under scrutiny • Holdfast – embrace wholeheartedly • Good – inherently genuine • Abstain – hold oneself from • Evil – malignant, harmful

  8. Actions of Worship • Responsibility to be discerning • Spiritual discernment is the ability to distinguish divine truth from error or from half-truth. Acts 17:11

  9. Actions of Worship • Application #1 • Are you being filled with the Holy Spirit through your submission to God, reading of His Word, and prayer or are you quenching the Spirit’s work in you?

  10. Attitudes of Worship • Application #2 • In your actions are you obeying the truth of God’s Word or are you despising it? • Application #3 • What are you doing that will make you more discerning?
