  1. Living in Community 1 Peter 5

  2. To You Elders: verses 1-4 1To the elders among you, vision, • prayer, • teaching, • restoration, • disbursement, & commissioning

  3. An Appeal • I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ's sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed: • 2Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers Acts 20:28Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.

  4. An Attitude • 1) —not because you must, • but because you are willing, • as God wants you to be; • 2) not greedy for money, • but eager to serve; • 3) 3not lording it over those entrusted to you, • but being examples to the flock. 1 Timothy 3:1If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task.

  5. An Award • 4And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away. • Hebrews 13:17Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.

  6. To You Young People: verses 5-9 5Young men... • Why Young Men?

  7. To You Young People: verses 5-9 5Young men... • Remember 2 Questions • What does this tell us about Peter and his community experience? • 2) What does this mean to me and my community experience?

  8. To You Young People: verses 5-9 • Be Submissive 5Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. • Definition: “to arrange oneself under the authority of another”

  9. To You Young People: verses 5-9 • Be Humble All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,    "God opposes the proud       but gives grace to the humble." 6Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.

  10. To You Young People: verses 5-9 • Be Humble • Definition: Thinking lowly of one’s self; claiming little for one’s self; not proud

  11. To You Young People: verses 5-9 • Be Humble • Misconceptions of Humility: • - False Modesty • - Misplaced Modesty

  12. To You Young People: verses 5-9 • Be Humble • “What we suffer from today is humility in the wrong place…A man was meant to be doubtful about himself, but undoubting about the truth; this has been exactly reversed…The old humility made a man doubtful about his efforts, which might make him work harder. But the new humility makes a man doubtful of his aims, which makes him stop working altogether.” • GK Chesterton, Orthodoxy

  13. To You Young People: verses 5-9 • Be Patient • 6…in due time. 7Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

  14. To You Young People: verses 5-9 • Be Self-Controlled 8Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

  15. To All of You: verses 10-14 • God’s • Personal • Callings

  16. God’s Personal Callings • 10And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. • 11To him be the power forever and ever. Amen.

  17. Peter’s Personal Remarks • 12With the help of Silas, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it. 13She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark. 14Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.

  18. Living in Community 1 Peter 5 Are you in a community relationship? -as a shepherd -willing to be shepherded
