  2. Learning and Teaching Scotland Confucius Classrooms Hubs across Scotland The aim is that every school in Scotland will have an opportunity to access these classrooms and their resources. The focus will be teaching and learning in Chinese language and culture, developed as part of international education in Scottish schools. Learning and Teaching Scotland

Learning and Teaching Scotland Confucius Classrooms • Acting as a hub for pupils, teachers, community members, other schools and local authorities to stimulate learning and teaching Chinese language and culture • Acting as a hub for teachers, schools and local authorities to see examples of practice and enable them to participate in specific professional development activities • Providing and developing resources for the teaching of Chinese language and culture

Learning and Teaching Scotland Confucius Classrooms • Examples of activities: • Organise activities to stimulate the teaching of Chinese language • Facilitate the teaching of Chinese language and culture in primary and secondary schools • Organise CPD related to the teaching of Chinese language and culture for teachers and the local community • Host Chinese language and cultural activities • Develop and provide resources to support teaching and learning in Chinese • Participate in learning community with other Confucius Classrooms in Scotland, China and other countries in the world. Learning and Teaching Scotland The story so far… • Expressions of interest sought from all LEAs – Jan. 2008 • Celebration of Confucius Classrooms at Perth High School in March 2008 - 8 Confucius Classroom hubs announced • Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in Beijing April 2008 between LTScotland and Hanban • Launch of on-line Confucius Classroom Hub • Physical sites and main contacts for each Hub established • Up-date to all Authorities and expressions of further interest sought – June 2009 • Hanban Agreement extended - 2 new CC Hubs to be established.

Learning and Teaching Scotland National Network of CC hubs St.George’s & Edinburgh City based in St.George’s School for Girls - launched 9th May 2008 Perth & Kinross based in Perth High School - launched 3rd November 2008 Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, Moray & Angus based in Hazlehead Academy – launched 5th March 2009 East, North & South Ayrshire based in Grange Academy - launched 12th January 2009 City of Glasgow based in Hillhead High School – launched 27th February 2009 East Dunbartonshire based in St.Ninian’s High School – launched 13th February 2009 North Lanarkshire based in Our Lady’s High School, Cumbernauld – launched 20th February 2009 West Lothian based in Bathgate Academy – launched 30th January 2009

  7. Learning and Teaching Scotland New Confucius Classroom hubs Fife based in Queen Anne High School Provisional Launch date – 17th March East Renfrewshire based in St.Ninian’s High School Launch date - tbc

Learning and Teaching Scotland Hub development activities for 2009/2010 National/ International Events CC Showcase at Scottish Learning Festival – Sept. 2009 CC Promotion at Beijing Annual Conference – December 2009 Chinese Language Classes for Staff – Taster Sessions at each Hub Oct – March Language Classes for staff CPD – 10 weeks Chinese Language Assistant & Teacher Support First Support Event – December 1st 2009 Cultural Workshops/ Festivals Kite-making Workshops in each Hub for staff from across Authorities for CPD. Hopefully invite up to 15 teachers to each Hub Workshop and they can ‘follow this up’ in their own schools. Kite Festivals in each Hub? Exhibitions? Chinese Music Workshops for pupils - Music Workshops & Festivals Lantern-making Workshops in each Hub for staff from across Authorities for CPD. Lantern Festival 15 days after Chinese New Year in each Hub?? – January 2010 SCIPD Visits ? Proposed Visit to Link Schools in Tianjin before the end of March 2010.

Learning and Teaching Scotland Other ideas for CC Hub Activity: • Tai Chi Classes for Pupils and Staff • Calligraphy Classes • Ping Pong Classes • Alternative Medicines Session • Linking with Local Businesses – Visits • Chinese Dance • Mask-making • Origami • Chinese Lion Dancing • Drama • ICT Developing Language

Learning and Teaching Scotland Hub development activities -the way ahead • Assistance with resourcing hubs and arranging activities for pupils and CPD opportunities for staff including SCIPD Visits and supporting the Launch of 2 new CC hubs. • Establishing Partner Schools links for all CC Hubs and exploring opportunities to develop Business Links in China for the CC Hubs. • Arranging regular contact meetings for all involved to develop and further networking activities. • Further develop on-line hub adding hub development news, events and Case Studies of good practice. • Exploring opportunities for developing Chinese Language through GLOW. • Organising/ Co-ordinating Regional and National Events to share and celebrate good practice and to further develop hubs and activities. • Linking with other organisations / bodies to ensure more effective communication
