  1. What is your Spiritual Jordan?

  2. Joshua 1:1-9 1Now it came about after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' servant, saying,2"Moses My servant is dead; now therefore arise, cross this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them, to the sons of Israel. 3Every place on which the sole of your foot treads, I have given it to you, just as I spoke to Moses. 4From the wilderness and this Lebanon, even as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and as far as the Great Sea toward the setting of the sun will be your territory. 5No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you.

  3. Joshua 1:1-9 6Be strong and courageous, for you shall give this people possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. 7Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go. 8This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success. 9Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."

  7. II. God’s Promise of the Land How do we cross our Jordan? Joshua 1:1-9

  8. 1st by acknowledging Roles Our Role: To Arise Joshua 1:1-9

  9. How We Cross Our Jordan Our Role: Cross Over Joshua 1:1-9

  10. How We Cross Our Jordan Acknowledging God’s Role I am giving & have given God’s boundaries Joshua 1:1-9

  11. The Condition: v. 3 “Every place on which the sole of your foot treads, I have given it to you, just as I spoke to Moses.” Matthew Henry- “The condition is here implied upon which this grant is made, in those words, as I said unto Moses, that is, 'upon the terms that Moses told you of many a time, if you will keep my statutes, you shall go in and possess that good land. Take it under those provisos and limitations, and not otherwise.’ The precept and the promise must not be separated.”

  12. III. God’s Promise of His Presence 2nd way we cross our Jordan Acknowledging Responsibilities God’s Responsibility Joshua 1:1-9

  13. God’s Responsibilities He will be with us v. 5 “No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; “for He Himself has said, ‘I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU’,” – Hebrews 13:5 “Peter said to them, ‘Repent and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit’,” – Acts 2:38 Joshua 1:1-9

  14. John 14:16-17 • “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.”

  15. God’s Responsibility He will not fail or forsake us v. 5 “I will not fail you or forsake you.” “NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU,”- Hebrews 13:5 “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those called according to His purpose.”-Rom. 8:28 “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.” James 1:2-3 Joshua 1:1-9

  16. All of this is evidence that we can move forward in God’s will and be assured of of God’s PRESENCE! “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31 Joshua 1:1-9

  17. How We Cross Our JordanOur Responsibility Joshua, was not to use the promise as a couch upon which his indolence might luxuriate, but as a girdle wherewith to gird up his loins for future activity. • Be Strong • Be Courageous Joshua 1:1-9

  18. Our Responsibility Be careful to observe the law v. 7 “be careful to do according to the law which Moses My servant commanded you; “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.” – Matthew 5:17 “If you love Me, you will keep my Commandments.” John 14:15 “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments;” – 1 John 5:3 Joshua 1:1-9

  19. Our Responsibility Do not turn from it v. 7 “do not turn from it to the right or to the left;” “For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.” - Matt 7:14 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding.” – Proverbs 3:5-6 Joshua 1:1-9

  20. IV. God’s Promise Towards Obedience 3rd by acknowledging Investments My Investment: Meditate Memorize Engage Joshua 1:1-9

  21. Meditate v. 8 “but you shall meditate on it day and night,” “But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.” – Psalm 1:2-3 Joshua 1:1-9

  22. Memorize • Psalm 119:9–16 • How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word. With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me wander from Your commandments. Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You. Blessed are You, O LORD; Teach me Your statutes. With my lips I have told of All the ordinances of Your mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, As much as in all riches. I will meditate on Your precepts And regard Your ways. I shall delight in Your statutes; I shall not forget Your word. Joshua 1:1-9

  23. Engage v. 8 “so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it,” Joshua 1:1-9

  24. Matthew Henry It is not enough to hear and read the word, to commend and admire it, to know and remember it, to talk and discourse of it, but WE MUST DO IT. Joshua 1:1-9

  25. HOWARD HENDRICKS Joshua 1:1-9

  26. “A reporter was interviewing renowned psychiatrist Karl Menninger at the famous Menninger Clinic in Topeka, KS. When the conversation turned to the subject of prison reform, the doctor handed his listener a book he had written on the subject. The reporter politely promised to read it. “No you won’t,” Dr. Menninger shot back in his acerbic manner. “Besides, what would you do about it if you did? Put the book down and go on to something else?” That’s exactly the situation confronting people when it comes to Bible study. They promise to pick up the Word, but it usually amounts to very little. The real question is this: Even if they did read and study God’s Word faithfully, what would they do about it? What practical difference would they let it make in their lives?” Joshua 1:1-9

  27. God’s Investment He will make us prosperous and successful “In the life of the Christian believer, prosperity and success aren’t to be measured by the standards of this world.” Warren Wiersbe He will be with us Joshua 1:1-9

  28. Our Response • My Jordan River is _____________? • Is God the LORD your God • Will you cross _______? • Do you treasure God’s word ______? Joshua 1:1-9
