  6. Spiritual Gifts & Christian Service • God gives spiritual gifts for the common good of the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:7) • The Church is a body with separate parts – they all need to function for it to be healthy • Spiritual gift + appropriate need = Effective ministry

  7. Spiritual Gifts & Christian Service • We all have a responsibility to obey God in certain areas, regardless of our gifting • Giving: James 2:15-16 • Evangelism: Matthew 28:19-20 • Serving: Galatians 5:13

  12. Current Gifts • Exhortation vs. Mercy • Both minister to the hurting • Exhortation is for primarily spiritual needs • Mercy is for primarily physical needs • Prophecy (Forth-telling) • Word from God for a specific situation • Does not carry the weight of scripture • David & Nathan

  13. Current Gifts • Service • Greek word diakoniameans everything from preparing and serving food to the office of apostles • Often translated ministry (Acts 20:24) • Common thread is life purpose

  14. Current Gifts • Leadership/Pastoring • Secular leadership vs. Greek word proistemi • Jesus has already given the mission (Matthew 28:18-20) • poimen(shepherd) is only used in Ephesians 4:11 • Everywhere else: leader, elder, overseer • Leading (ruling) and Pastoring (caring & guiding) are two elements of office of elder/overseer
