  1. . . . PENNIES for theAGES. . . • Push the “Sample More Data” button on the screen and read the average age of a sample of 25 pennies taken from the jar. • Note the horizontal and vertical scales on the grid here and then record that (rounded) average age using a properly scaled X. MAT 312

  2. Prob & Stat (MAT 312)Dr. Day Tuesday March 18, 2014 • Grab 25 Pennies at Random then Calculateand Plot Average Age • Incoming Assignment #5: Median-Median Lines, Least-Squares Regression Lines, and SSEs • Judging the Goodness of Fit: A Comprehensive Perspective • scatter plot with ellipse test/proposed model • sum-of-the-squared errors (SSE) • correlation coefficient (r) • residual plot • Quiz #5 MAT 312

  3. Assignment #5 Use the Couples' Ages data set, handed out in class, to complete the following tasks. 1. Create the equation for the median-median line of this data set, using husband's ages as the first element (x) of each ordered pair and wife's ages as the second element (y) in each ordered pair. Show all steps in the process as we illustrated in class and express your equation in slope-intercept form. You can check the equation of your median-median line using your calculator. 2. Use your calculator to generate the least-squares linear regression equation for this data set, using husband's ages as the first element (x) of each ordered pair and wife's ages as the second element (y) in each ordered pair. Copy all the information your calculator shows you when you generate the least-squares equation. Express your equation in slope-intercept form. 3. Calculate the sum of the squared error terms (SSE) for each of the models you just created (i.e., for the median-median line and for the least-squares line). You are encouraged to use your calculator's "lists" features to carry out your calculations. Express each sum rounded to the nearest hundredth of a unit. Complete this assignment and bring it to class for discussion and submission. You may use a computer or calculator for any parts of the assignment and include the information/output with your submission. MAT 312

  4. Couples’ Ages at Marriage MAT 312

  5. Prep for Test #2 • Review: 1-Variable Data Analysis • 2-Variable Data Analysis • Big Ideas: Direction, Shape, Strength • Lines of Best Fit • Spaghetti Lines • Median-Median Lines • Least-Squares Regression Line • Judging Goodness of Fit • Format: 25 MCQ, Small Set of Open-Response Questions MAT 312

  6. Assignment #5 Use the EPA Mileages data set, handed out in class, to complete the following tasks. • Explore the data and generate a best-fit model to represent the data. Your model can be linear or non-linear. • Create a scatter plot of the data (city vs. highway) and over it sketch your model. • Explain why your best-fit model has “goodness of fit” as we’ve discussed in class. Present multiple criteria to justify your best-fitting model. Complete this assignment and bring it to class for discussion and submission. You may use a computer or calculator for any parts of the assignment and include the information/output with your submission. MAT 312
