  2. Terminal Learning Objective Action: Introduction to Modernized Demolition Initiators

  3. HISTORY • Developed in the late 40s • Used in Civilian Market • Introduced to the Army in 1996

  4. CONSIDERATIONS • MDI DOES NOT CHANGE CHARGE EMPLACEMENT OR SETUP • MDI IS STRICTLY AN IGNITION SYSTEM CHANGE.

  5. CAPABILITIES • Standard military demolition missions • Deepwater up to 30 meters • Quarrying(with special application). • Instant or delay initiation • Eliminates accidental initiation from static, transmitters, or electrical discharge • Hybrid (two types of firing systems) • MDI Stand Alone • MDI/Det Cord, Det Cord/MDI

  6. M12/M13-Cap M12/M13-Cap M15-Cap M15-Cap M11-Cap M11-Cap M14 Time Fuse M14 Time Fuse M81-FI M81-FI M9 Holder M9 Holder 8 COMPONENTS

  7. M9 HOLDER • USES: • Secure a blasting cap (small flap end) • Secure shock tubes to the blasting cap (larger flap) • Can secure up to five shock tubes for initiation • PACKAGING: • 50 Ea Per box • 10 boxes per crate • Crate Total- 500

  8. M9 HOLDER SECURING SHOCK TUBE • 1-2 Shock Tubes • Looped under holder • 3-5 Shock Tubes • Tied in a knot

  9. M11 BLASTING CAP • A branch line to a primary charge • To ignite shock tube or detonating cord • “High Strength Cap”

  10. M11 DESCRIPTION • 2 FLAGS • 1 YELLOW (two meters from cap) • 1 RED (one meter from cap) • J HOOK CONNECTORUsed to secure det cord • PACKAGING • Individual coil—30ft. long • 6 coils per fiber board box • 10 boxes per crate • Crate Total= 60 coils

  11. M12 TRANSMISSION LINE • Relay for the initiation pulse to another relay or high strength cap • Low Strength Cap • Command Detonation “ Transmission Line Only”

  12. M12 PACKAGING • 500 FT. per spool • 2 Ea spools per foil bag • 4 bags per crate • Crate total- 8 spools/ 4000 Ft.

  13. M13 TRANSMISSION LINE • Relay for the initiation pulse to another relay or high strength cap • Low Strength Cap • Command Detonation “ Transmission Line Only”

  14. M13 PACKAGING • 1000 Ft spool • 1 spool per foil bag • 4 bags per crate • Crate Total= 4 spools/ 4000 Ft

  15. M14 TIME DELAY • “High Strength Cap” • 5 minute delay • Length may be adjusted • Detonates Explosives, Det Cord or Shock Tube

  16. M14 PACKAGING • Approx. 7 ½ ft. long • 6 coils per fiber board box • 10 boxes per crate • Crate Total= 60 Coils

  17. M15 CAP, DELAY “ Currently a specialized use item only”

  18. M15 USES • Provide a Delay in the System for Staged Demolitions • Is usually used for Quarrying Operations

  19. M15 PACKAGING • 70 Ft Individual Coils • 6 Coils Per Fiber Board Box • 10 Boxes Per Crate • Crate Total- 60 Coils/ 4200 Ft

  20. M81 IGNITER • To Ignite Time Blasting Fuse (M14) • Ignite Shock Tube • M81 has a stronger cap • than M60, heavier case, • and 2 plugs

  21. M81 PACKAGING • 5 Per Fiber Board box • 60 Boxes Per Crate • Crate Total - 300 Igniters

  22. SUMMARY • MDI Components • Constructing a Nonelectric Initiating Assembly • Constructing a Dual-firing System • Priming Explosives
