History • City created in 50 A.D. as part of the Roman Empire • Was and still is located on the Rhine River, which gives it the advantage of being the intersection between the major trade routes of the west and east • This advantage was their major basis of growth • City was taken over by French Republic in 1798 • In 1815, Köln was made a part of the Kingdom of Prussia • By WWI, Köln had grown to 700,000 in population, and industrialization spurred much growth

Devastation in Köln • Köln endured 262 air raids during WWII which killed approximately 20,000 civilians • By the end of the war, the population had been reduced by 95%, mostly due to massive evacuations • Similar raids happened in many other German cities during this time • By 1945, Köln’s population had already risen to 500,000

About Köln… • Today, Köln is Germany’s fourth largest city (compared to Munich, Berlin, and Hamburg) • One of the oldest cities in Germany • The Kölner Dom is a gothic church which was started in 1248 and finally completed in 1880 • Cologne University is one of the oldest universities in Europe • With 44,000 students, it is also the largest university in Germany • The Twelve Romanesque Churches are examples of medieval sacral architecture. The roots of some of the churches date back as far as Roman times. With the exception of St. Maria Lyskirchen all of these churches were very badly damaged during World War II. Reconstruction was only finished in the 1990s.
