  1. Fedele Mentorship #101

  2. What do you want to know

  3. Why do we care about mentorship?

  4. Mentorship clips! • What do people feel about mentorship! LET’S GO CHECK IT OUT:D • http://www.5min.com/Tag/mentor

  5. What is a mentor? Someone who chooses to be there for the mentee on a regular basis for a sustained period of time A teacher? A listener? A guide?

  6. Role of a mentor? Helping mentees: develop as individuals according to their natural selves, and their own wishes

  7. BE SINCERE

  8. ACCEPT HER

  9. SET EXPECTATIONS

  10. BE HONEST

  11. ROLE MODEL

  12. SHARE

  13. ASK QUESTIONS

  14. BE FLEXIBLE

  15. ACKNOWLEDGE

  16. BE HUMAN

  17. Different mentorship styles The Director • Giving specific advice and direction based on their personal experience • Advice is explicit and easily understandable • Hoping that the mentee will get a good start and later on be able to be independent • Potential Problem: Over dependent mentee For when the mentee lacks experience to make a decision unassisted

  18. Different mentorship styles The Cheerleader • A seemingly inexhaustible source of encouraging words and positive reinforcement • With an eye for helping the mentee achieve her best through hard work and self-belief • Focuses on the positive - the quickest way to get one’s mentee back on her feet • Potential Problem: Unrealistic Providing support when the mentee is experiencing stress and uncertainty

  19. Different mentorship styles The Counsellor – • Be there to help mentees evaluate the options open to them • Help the mentee see a bigger picture • Questions the mentee about how and why they will handle a situation to ensure they are fully considering all options and if they are being level-headed For when mentees have enough experience to handle situations but need help evaluating options

  20. Things you can do • Share what you know – Personal experiences that might help/encourage them in their growth • Help your mentee to find the answers herself – Spoonfeeding might be the easiest way but it is not the kindest way. For your mentee benefit the most, help them to discover the answers themselves. (Telling your mentee what to do leads them to being more like you and does not help them find their true self) • Ask them facilitative, guiding, interpretive, non-judgemental questions to guide them

  21. Let’s get personal(:

  22. Scenarios(: Now break into groups to discuss scenarios given! • Stressed-out mentee • Mentee who made a Mistake • Jaded • Has the potential to move on mentee Etc.

  23. Make it real– Planning your mentorship journey • List out concrete steps on HOW-TO be a better mentor to your fellow buddies/juniors/dept members now! • Evaluate your past mentorship experience. (RATE 1 TO 10) 1 being “I was such a lousy mentor, I was rarely there for her at all.”, 10 being “I was so AWESOME to my mentee, I was there to pick her up and watch her learn all the time<3!”

  24. Fedele MAJOR discussion • Were you a good enough mentor? • How can we, as a batch, help keep this legacy going on through mentoring? • MOREMOREMORE.

  25. Movie time! Ever wonder how great an effect a mentor can have on someone’s life?! Coach Carter- Our deepest fear speech & Wise words from Will Smith in the Pursuit of Happiness & Michael Jordan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-STD8-RS2k&feature=related (watch out for channing tatum) “Thank you, you saved my life.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPnudujlBZI&feature=related “You want something. Go get it. Period.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PH8nTfxwByY&NR=1 “Or maybe, you’re just making excuses”

  26. This is how important a mentor can be. • Question is: Can you “save someone’s life” today?
