What is a SQR? • School improvement support and intervention strategy for schools identified in the Improvement (year 1) phase of NYS Differentiated Accountability (DA) system • BOCES gives districts the support and assistance in developing and implementing improvement strategies to address the needs of schools in the Improvementphase

  4. What is SQR? (con’t) • SQR involves development of a culture of review and ongoing improvement to guide schools and districts on a continuous journey of improvement. • A researched-based, reflective process that provides identified schools and districts with guidance on key factors that affect school success.

  5. Accountability Designations • Based on both the number and type of student groups failing to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for two consecutive years in the same content area and in the same subgroup • Accountability measures for schools: • Elementary/middle level • English Language Arts, mathematics and science • Secondary level • English Language Arts, mathematics and graduation rate

Steps to the SQR Process • The schools form a SQR team • Review of the curriculum, instruction and assessment with the NYS Common Core Learning Standards • The school determines steps for improvement and a Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP) is written as a 2-year school improvement plan that includes specific strategies for improvement and progress monitoring • A Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) is then developed using the goals, objectives and improvement activities in the CEP

Student Achievement HistoryApollo Middle School 2008-2009: Identified by New York State Education Department (NYSED) as a School in Need of Improvement according to Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for Students with Disabilities in English Language Arts (ELA) Steps taken to improve student achievement: Special Education ELA Curriculum Review by Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES School Improvement Plan with Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely (SMART) Goals Professional development in co-teaching Initiated instructional cycle of pre and post assessments Core extension period started Initiated review of ELA power standards to develop common formative assessment

Student Achievement HistoryApollo Middle School 2011-2012: Identified by NYSED as a school for Restructuring (Year 1) according to AYP for Students with Disabilities and Blacks in the area of ELA Steps taken to improve student achievement: Joint Intervention Team (JIT) review Increased literacy coaches support Analysis of interim assessment results and development of future action plans Initiated humanities approach at 6th grade to increase ELA time Increased ELA support time for struggling students Redesigned administrative schedules to allow for increased classroom visits

Anticipated Recommendations from the Joint Intervention Team Need for a clearly articulated and aligned ELA curriculum Restructure administrative leadership Restructure student schedule to increase academic support Provide teachers with professional development related to lesson planning and data-driven response instruction Replicate successful programs and eliminate ineffective programs
