  4. Introduction A lot of Zakynthians refer to the island as “Fioro di Levante” (“flower of the East”). Due to the earthquake of 1953 the students don’t have the actual icon of the island’s glimpse that can justify this compellation. They have to study culture, history, art, museums, music, monuments and even the localvocabulary, in order to understand this characterization initially given to the island by the Venetians.

Task The aim of the project is to create a history dossier, refering to Zakynthos before the earthquake of 1953, consisted of: • a power point presenting the islands history from the prehistoric period up to the 20th century (1953) • a photo album with photos, sketches and paintings of old Zakynthos • a brochure of the students’ visit to old Zakynthos titled: “If I had a time machine I would like to visit Zakynthos in …(historical period)

Each group has a particular task: - 1st group: The history of Zakynthos - 2nd group: Zakynthian art and artists - 3rd group: Monuments of the past that don’t exist nowadays - 4th group: Music and musians - 5th group: Local Zakynthian Vocalbury - 6th group: Natural beauties of the island • Each group has a coordinator that distributes and supervises the work and each member is equally responsible for the final result of the task

Conclusion The students have managed to travel mentally to ancient and old Zakynthos and can share the enthusiasm of those that called the island “Fioro di Levante” Final discussion • Did they enjoy the whole process? • Did they all equally participate and work? • Would they change something? • How do they intend to use the producted material?
