  1. Dada 1916-1922

  2. Dada • Founded in Zurich in 1916 by a group of refugees from World War I. • Dada artists felt the could no longer trust reason and the establishment. Their alternative was to overthrow all authority and cultivate absurdity.

  3. Arp • He discovered the principle of random collage by accident, when he tore up a drawing and threw the pieces on the floor. He admired the haphazard pattern the scraps formed.

  4. Chance by Arp

  5. Schwitters • Scoured gutters for discarded junk like bus tickets, buttons, and shreds of paper. • Combined these into collages and sculptures.

  6. Construction for Noble Ladies by Schwitters

  7. The Holy Night by AntoniAllegri, known as Correggio by Schwitters

  8. Dada • By 1922, Dada- admittedly “against everything, even Dada” dissolved into anarchy. • It’s contribution was to make art less an intellectual exercise and more a foray into the unpredictable.

  9. Marcel Duchamp • Considered a prime mover in both Dada & Surrealism art movements • Armory Show in 1913 brought together Matisse, Picasso and Duchamp’s artwork

  10. Marcel Duchamp • Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase was the Armory Show’s runaway sensation.

  11. Nude Descending a Staircase by Duchamp

  12. Marcel Duchamp • Invented a new art form called “readymades” by mounting a bicycle wheel on a kitchen stool. • His most controversial readymade was a porcelain urinal he signed R. Mutt

  13. Marcel Duchamp • Duchamp defended the unconventional objet d’art saying “Whether Mr. Mutt with his own hand made the fountain or not has no importance. He CHOSE it…create a new thought for that object.”
