  1. What is Project Methodologies ?

  2. Final Year Project (FYP) • Every EE HD student must complete a final year project (FYP) in year-2 as a group • Project is implemented by 2-3 students (but may be only 1 student doing all the work ) • Project = 9 credits (= 3 subjects!!!) • The FYP can have significant impact in your overall GPA !!!

  3. FYP • If you want a better GPA then you should do well in your FYP • In the past, your FYP grade may affect your classification • If a student is in the borderline between a credit and a distinction then if the student gets an “A” in the FYP then most likely the student will get a “distinction” because of the FYP grade

  4. Why you need to do FYP? • FYP provide you the trainings in • To work indepedently as a group!!!! • To carry out “problem solving” • To time manage • To apply knowledge learnt in practice • So projects in different areas can achieve the above tasks

  5. FYP titles of this year • A Batteryless Automatic Electronic Sensor Water Tap • An automatic storage warehouse • Design of General Lighting Schemes • Fiber optic acoustic pressure sensor • Chromatic Dispersion in long-haul fiber-optic transmission system • Flexible Battery Charging System

  6. FYP titles • A wireless charger for the application of deep brain stimulation system • Fall detection system • Smart Suit-case • Demonstration model of an intelligent material handling system in a building. • Parking system for vehicles • Magnetic hyperthermia system for tumor treatment

  7. FYP titles • Development of a small solar-powered electric aircraft • Intelligent Fan • Electricity Load Forecast • A scale down model of regenerative braking system • Communication mechanism for a multi-robot system • Development of a Programmable Dynamometer • Electronic Door Lock System (self proposed)

  8. FYP • From the list, projects cover many different topics • What is “Magnetic hyperthermia system for tumor treatment” ? • Is it a smart material project? • Is it a power electronic project? • Is it possible to complete in 6 months?

  9. What is methodology? • Methodology - 方法論 • A set of methods • Project methodologies – apply a set of methods to execute your project or a systematic approach to implement your project

  10. Stages for implementing a FYP • Choose a project from a list (End of Semester 2 Year 1) • Write a proposal (deadline 9-Sept-2011) (5%) • Submit a mid-term report (30-Dec) (15%) • Draft report (24-Feb-2012) • Submit a final report (9-Mar-2012) (50%) • Poster presentation and demonstration (31-Mar-2012) (30%)

  11. EE3802 learning outcomes • This subject will try to teach you how to write your proposal, report • How to implement your project • In addition, some discussion on presentation will also be included

  12. Schedule

  13. What is the best method to implement a project? • Hard work • Hard work • More Hard work • If you work hard then you will get good grade!!!!!

  14. Best method • Talk to your supervisor on a regular basis • In most cases, your supervisor will help!!! • Check your email (polyu.edu.hk) on a regular basis as some supervisors will only communicate via email!!!

  15. Quiz – how well do you know your department • How many staff in EE are involved in teaching and tutorial? • Who is your program leader? • Who is/are now your teacher but also graduate of PolyU? • Who left the department in summer 2011 • Who will retire in 2011 • Who is your Head of Department? • How many staff in the General Office?

  16. Types of EE project • Common project in the following areas • Building hardware • Writing software • Develop of a system consisting of hardware and software • Experimental projects • Site measurements projects • Desktop study type projects

  17. Building hardware • Build hardware system (electronic or electrical or electrical mechanical) to fulfill certain specifications, to verify some design concept, to proof some theory, or to check the feasibility of certain design, etc.

  18. Software • Develop a program or a software package for simulation of certain system, or as CAD/CAE (computer aided design, computer aided engineering) package for engineers to use, or as an software analysis tools, or for solving some engineering problem etc.

  19. Develop of a system consisting of both hardware and software • A combination of the above two types, as some engineering systems need a combination of software and hardware. • Example robotic system or embedded system

  20. Experimental projects • Carrying out a number of experiments under various sort of conditions, then analysis the results data to draw certain conclusions on some concepts, or to proof some theory, or to verify some principle.

  21. Site measurement projects • Carrying out a number of site survey/site measurement or questionnaire survey, then analysis the results data to draw certain conclusions on some concepts, or to proof some theory, or to verify some principles.

  22. Desktop study type projects • Include theory development, analysis of existing data, search and analysis of information, etc.

  23. Group project • There are 2/3 students in a group • Grade is given to the project • But are you all contributing? • Is it fare? • If only 1 member is doing all the work and sharing the same grade with the others • However, it is possible to give a lower grade to member not contributing!!!!

  24. Assessment of EE3802 • EE3802 has no Examination • Continuous assessment only! • Proposal • In class exercises (quiz) • Presentation

  25. Conclusion • It is your project not your supervisor’s project!!! • Doing a FYP is not time-effective ?! • Your FYP, in theory, will occupy more of your time then studying for three subjects!!!! • So you must have an early start! • What have you done for your project?
